Running Lightroom on two different machines
      #694080 - 21/08/2008 13:24

Does anyone here run Lightoom on two different machines and if so how do you manage the catalogue?

What I'm hoping to do is work towards getting one of these micro laptops if they will run Lightroom. I can then use them to upload photos to, work on them in Lightroom, send out which files I need to there and then, and then add them to my main catalogue when back at the bat cave.

Haven't found a way of doing it yet...

Unless the catalogue and the files are on an external drive.

I know that you can export a catalogue, but not sure if it will the files and the catalogue details to the desktop hard-drive?

Have you looked at the Windoze synchronise function? You would have a catalogue on each machine but as long as you didn't do separate edits on each while off line they should be automatically sychronised periodically.

the other possibility is to keep the catalogue on a shared drive on the laptop and only use the desktop pc copy of Lightroom when the laptop is on the network

Can you run Lightroom on two computers with only one licence or do you have to buy a second licence? Microsoft allows you to run a single licence for Office on both your desktop and laptop.

As the Software Asset Manager for a large utility company I was slightly surprised to read that you can install Ligthtroom on 2 machines and so I read the EULA (End User License Agreement) which is basically the bit you agree to when you install most software and click the 'I agree' button.

But, you are right and this is the important bit:-

2.4 Portable or Home Computer Use. The primary user of the Computer on which the Software is installed may install a second copy of the Software for his or her exclusive use on either a portable Computer or a Computer located at his or her home, provided the Software on the portable or home Computer is not used at the same time as the Software on the primary Computer.

Thanks,

Darrell

P.S. This is also the case for Photoshop 6 as well with regards installation so you can also install it on 2 machines.

That's right Darrell, Adobe have always allowed installation to two machines. I have used Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Lightroom and Acrobat for quite a few years and all have had a similar clause in the EULAs. Microsoft used to but not sure whether that's still the case, although not for their operating systems.

You can have the library on an external volume and run it on 2 computers (this is how it's on my Mac Mini and MacBook). As the library is same and data location is the same then it works fine.

You can maintain more than one catalog if required, so if you have an external drive for a laptop (with the catalog and images) you should be able to read this on a desktop PC just by changing the catalog on startup. I've looked at merging catalogs and there doesn't seem to be any info.

I guess the way I use lightroom might be a issue for merging catlogs. I tend to use my catalog as just that, and the images are still in the original location. You can setup the catalog to import the images into it.

/edit On my catalog I saved the metadata of an image file (simple CMD S keystroke - think you might be able to set it as standard), on import of this image to my MacBook it had all the changes made to the image which I did on my MacMini.

How about using microsoft synctoy to update changes between the folders (assuming you'll be using them on a network where they can 'see' each other)?
