Well, what with the credit crunch and everything, sacrifices have to be made, and thoughts inevitably turn to making do and mending.
Any plans I had to buy an E3 have now evaporated, (I didn't really have any anyway), and I have even thought of eating cardboard film boxes to ease the hunger pangs.
(I'm sure those Velvia boxes would taste nice. And they've been in the freezer next to the Kippers for a while now which should add some flavour).
Anyhow, I was in Boots on Saturday, and thinking of injecting money into the economy, I spotted some Kodachrome 64 on the shelf. It was a bit short dated (Oct 2008), so I asked if there might be any discount. The assistant said she could let me have it at half price (about £6 something), and called for the Supervisor, who said I could have it for £5 a roll! I had already picked up three rolls to take advantage of the 3 for the price of 2 offer, so I got three rolls of Kodachrome for £10.
It must be at least twenty-five years since I last used Kodachrome (in the days when it was sent to PO Box 14 at Hemel Hempstead, and years before I got my OM4Ti), so I couldn't wait to try it again.
Anyhow, I took advantage of the sun this afternoon, and took my old pride and joy out for a walk. Sadly I don't use teh OM as often as I should these days, but that huge, bright viewfinder was a real joy to use.
Oh well, only a few more exposures to go and my first envelope will be on it's way to Switzerland.

Let's hope you beat the closing date of the lab! I'm sure that somewhere recently I saw something about the few remaining processing labs being closed... I've still got a few cassettes of K64 and even a K25 in my 'fridge.

Thank you David.
I posted this slightly 'tongue in cheek' (as I usually do), but it seems the humour fell on stony ground.
However, there was, and is a serious point to my post, as (for me at least), there is often more pleasure to be had from re-discovering an old friend like the OM as there is from spending £hundreds or even £thousands on new kit. Indeed, I am finding new digital kit increasingly boring to look at and use, in much the same way that computer motherboards and memory sticks do nothing for me, whilst good film cameras continue to fascinate me, and motivate me to go out and take pictures.
I don’t deny that modern digital equipment is technically very competent, (I am certainly happy with my mine), but somehow, and as much as I like my E1 and G9, I can never feel as ‘attached' to a digital cameras as I am to my film cameras. Each to their own I suppose.
Anyhow, regarding Kodachrome, I found the following statement on the Kodak website:
Quote:
The Kodak photo processing laboratory in Renens, Switzerland has been closed. Kodak continues to offer Kodachrome processing for European customers by shipping our 35mm slide film to Dwayne's Photo of Parsons, Kansas. There is no additional charge for this service. European customers should continue to send their KODACHROME Film and mailers to the address below, as they have in the past.
Kodak SA Laboratoire KODACHROME Case Postale Ch-1001 Lausanne Switzerland, CH
Link to Kodak Web Page
One of the new rolls that I bought was dated September 2009, so presumably, Kodak intends to continue processing Kodachrome at least until then?

I SO share your sentiments. I find most digital cameras distinctly uninspiring. I just wish I had the space to set up a permanent darkroom and get back to 'real' photography rather than this post-production tinkered digital snapping - convenient though that undoubtedly is.
It's like the old digital versus vinyl debate. While CDs, MP3s etc are undoubtedly more convenient - vinyl generally wins on virtually every other count.

Correct both times! - I've got hundreds of CDs I never use and thousands of LPs I play on a daily basis (some of, that is) - I buy them all the time! About the only time 'digital anything' beats its 'analogue' opposite is calculators and computers; when it comes down to satisfaction and the nth degree of quality 'analogue' wins every time, in my book....

Not only does analogue sound better than digital, analoge sound even better still if played through valve amplifiers IMVHO.

But how do you connect up the OM4Ti to a valve amp?

I now have a new 'problem'.
I bought a brand new, never out of the box OM4Ti over the weekend (from Asti who posted on here recently).
I bought it fully intending to use it, but it looks and feels so gorgeous that I am almost afraid to use it.
What should I do?

Agreed, my old Marshall head still sounds fantastic! If you've never 'felt' 100watts of Valve power through eight 12 inch speakers you haven't lived!
Unfortunately I'm goign to have to sell it as I have no room, will probably buy a 50Watt Valve combo to replace it.

I know just what you mean. I have 'felt' 100 watts of valve power, and it is just sheer magic. Being able to see the electrons inside the glass envelopes is even better.
Whilst on the subject, have you ever 'felt' a 64 foot gravissima being played? (Bottom C = 8 Hz).

Where is there one? (A real one, not an electronic simulation). ISTR York Minster has one, but they daren't use it for fear of shaking the building down; IDSTR any others in the UK. So, if you know of an operational set of 64 foot organ pipes, please tell us where.

Facing the same problem - bought a mint boxed unused 1982 Nikon FE2 (posted pictures on the Classic thread a few weeks ago) and it looks so perfect I chickened out of taking it on a "spin" last weekend.
For that reason I'd never buy a highly restored classic car!
Talking of low frequency organs - I remember an old LP from Abba where there was a track called "old friends do" or something like that with the most shattering organ track that I have ever heard. Everything in the room used to shake. It sounded like a real organ, not an electronic one, so I wonder where they recorded it?
