nikon 3oomm f4 lens

I am thinking of taking a few wildlife shots as a hobby and wondered if anyone had any experience of the performance of the nikon 300mm f4 lens.I still have my camouflage net from my shooting days and prefer to get reasonably close rather than rely on a 500mm lens.I will be using a D80.
