Canon G9 - Does it attract dust ?
      #712219 - 29/09/2008 21:42

Hello, I' looking to buy a new camera and have to admit that the G9 ticks alot of boxes (i'd like to get into photography, but maybe not a DSLR yet).

I was all set to buy it and then a few scare stories have paused me.

Anyone know if this is a common problem? Anyone had any similar stories or know the volumes affected?

I'm thinking of taking it to Everest and then on Safari so if this is a problem would that be asking for trouble?

If it does look like a non starter can anyone suggest a similar model?

Any advice greatfully received.

I've only had my G9 for about 4 months, but I haven't noticed any problems with dust. It seems to be pretty well sealed. I wonder where these rumours start.

You may have more problems and have to take care when changing lenses on a dSLR, but I don't foresee much problem with a compact like the G9.

Yeah, I nipped round about 5 camera shops earlier asking them if they'd heard anything to support this rumour.

They hadn't, but I didn't know if that was salesman not wanting to badmouth their wares.

If it doesn't have a problem with dust I really am tempted. The reviews seem excellent, and I'm really keen to finally have a good camera when I head up to Everest.

Depends when your trip to Everest is planned, but if you can wait until after the G10 is released, the G9 prices will drop.

You must post some of your images here on your return. I look forward to them . Take Care and enjoy your trip, is it an organised expedition through a well-informed group?

Edit: Just looked up the minimum operating temperature:
Quote:

Min Operating Temperature 32 °F

That's freezing point, probably not advisable on Everest

Yeah, it's an organised trip, so they should look after us.

Will have a look around at other brands and see what their temperature ranges are.

We're only going to Base camp (which is high enough at 5500m!) and I think the temperatures only got severely low at night. Apparenlty the average temperature (before windchill) is about 12-15 C at this time of year. I'm pretty sure if I'm taking photos up not too long after sundown I'd get away with it.

I have had my G9 for about a year now with no dust problems despite (though not often) using it on building sites recording projects.
Though I could not comment on prolonged low temperature use, mine has been used skiing when the car's outside temperature reading was minus 17 deg.C .
What ever camera you eventually buy, keep it inside your outer layer of clothing when not in use to help the battery and LCD display working.

Alternatively consider one of the Olympus Mju SW range, such as the new mju 1050 SW. It isn't a patch on the G9 as a camera, basically its just a point and shoot, but is 'freezeproof'. The spec says down to -10°C but possibly lower. Maybe one of your team could take one as an emergency backup to the G9.

This dust issue has been commented on for a while but having had a G7 for about 3 years I can't say it's ever been a problem to me....

I've not had to take my G9 apart, but I have taken a few other compacts apart and I would suspect that the G9 has rubber seals between the extending parts of the lens to minimise dust intrusion. I've not had any issues with my G9 yet, dust or otherwise
