Does anyone know when Canon will be bringing out the next biggy?!
I want to get into professional photography and i'm after a professional camera.
Is there one in the pipeline?
Cheers.

Who says you need a 'professional' camera to be a professional photographer?
What about buying decent glass?

Well, the 1Ds MKIII isn't that old so I doubt they'll be replacing it any time soon.
My advice would be purchase when you're ready

Who knows?
If you want rumours see the link to a rumour site below. It's just a bit of fun but they normally get the spec pretty much right as the date of release gets closer.

The question right now is just how good is the 5D Mk11 and how much will it impact on 1Ds sales. It may be all you need, or do you want high burst rate and AF to F8 for those long lens / extender combos? Beyond that it's crystal ball time.

Maybe they'll do a slight upgrade to the 1D MkIII in the next year or so (like the 1D MkII N). Maybe they won't and the next 1D update will be in 2 years (or sooner if more switch to Nikon).

Well its a very vague question, how about telling us a bit more...sports, pap, weddings, commercial, nature, travel?......You might be a professional driver...whether you buy a McClaren or a hearse depends on what kind of driver you aim to be. Different tools for different jobs.

I agree with Graeme. What's in your camera bag at the moment?

Surely the 1D MkIII would be the better model for sports (unless it's a very slow sport in bright light)

I would think thats your best bet too although you might be able to find a good Mk1 or Mkii to get you up and running. As Fen hinted at upstairs buying the lenses is going to be just as important (or more important) than the body. You will need good glass and that is never cheep, but the glass should out last the body, so it is a wise investment.

No, I just think this is someone who hasn't really thought this through and has no really experience of professional photography.
I could be wrong, but if you were really serious about turning pro then you wouldn't need to ask an amateur forum for advice on camera...you'd already know what you need and probably a bit about Canon's lifecycle on their cameras from a little research.

honestly I echo the thoughts about lenses - what lenses do you currently have access to and which ones are you budgeting for? You will notice a far greater improvement with better glass than you will with a better body. A midrange camera (40D, 5D - 50D, 5DM2) along with some good L class lenses would do you far better than a 1D with low end lenses. Further - if you don't have a huge range of kit at the moment you might look to the Nikon line of cameras - their current midrange body offerings for sports/wildlife shooting are (mostly generally considered) better than Canon's current offerings - of course we are talking new body models so high prices.

Having looked back though some of the images Trurosurfer has posted I suggest the best investment would be in continuing to gain experience. It looks like he has a body and some lenses that work pretty well so to me the best thing to work on is the creative side.....if the need for certain features of cameras, lenses or flashes present themselves fair enough, that's the time to invest in new kit IMHO. You'll likely know whaty new kit you need when they do

On what we've heard so far I'd have to agree. The world is full of people who dream about doing a particular job after a passion they have, but sports photography is not going to be easy to get into. A few years ago I bought a 300mm f/2.8 from someone who, together with his brother, had exactly the same idea. That was the last item of the probably quite extensive kit they'd shelled out for which was being sold off again after reality bit.
That said, I'd agree that either a 1D or Nikon D3 is a far better place to start your search (and cheaper too!).

I would agree with the rest here, the 1D series is better for sports photography, from the 1D mkIIn that my friend has, that is far more suited for his sports photography than his 1ds mkII. I can't see any replacement for the 1dIII any time soon, though you never know!

If i'm not serious about sports photography or good at it, daft-biker, why have I had recent pics in the News of the World and The Mirrors sport sections?
As for lenses, I already have a range of good ones.
The reason I posted the message, was hopefully get a bit of kind advice from people, not bitchy messages saying I need to improve.
Asking an amature forum just broadens my horizons.
Thanks to the decent people that have given me advice tho!
