What 2nd lens to buy
      #712076 - 29/09/2008 15:31

Our Head of English dropped in and asked if we had a longer lens for the dept's E500, which only has the 14-45.
We haven't of course, so she asked if I could look somthing out for her.
Now I'm a Canon Man myself, so I don't know what works well for 4/3, I think she was looking for somthing to shoot from the rear of our Hall, ~45 metres.
Does anyone have any suggestions, remembering we are a school and therefore hard-up.
Thanks in advance,
Dave

You can get the 40-150 fairly easily. There should be plenty of cheap ones on eBay. I've got one and it's fine!

Careful now!

I would second the reccomendation for the 40 ~ 150 lens.

It's not the fastest lens on the planet, but quality is excellent, and its small and lightweight.

If money was no object I would suggest the 50 ~ 200, which is faster but heavier, and costs around £700 IIRC.

There are two versions of the 40-150, an older, faster version, and a newer, smaller and slower version.

I've heard differing reports regarding which is better, however if in a school hall the older one may be preferable. I have this version, and have been very pleased with it.

Having said that, I saw the new version for sale at SRS Microsystems online, at £90, which is the cheapest I've seen it anywhere

I bought the E-510 with the the 14-45 and the 40-150 and have been pretty pleased with the results. If you are on a budget then the 40-150 is probably a good bet.

Warehouse express are now doing the Sigma 55-200 4/3 lens for £97, but I have no Idea what that's like.

Taken with the 40-150 at ISO 400 shutter 1/1000

I had the old version which came with my E500 and when I upgraded to an E510 I kept it as I felt that the extra weight was more than balanced out by the extra speed. It was a very good lens but when I got the 70-300 I gave it away (to my daughter who already had the E500) as I never seemed to be using it.

One other point in favour of the newer version, which nobody has mentioned, is that it has a closer focussing distance - no use from the back of the school hall but for some applications it could be useful

Roger

Thanks for the replies, and for not flaming me! As it happens, I was the one who recomended the E500.
Ok, so the 40-150 seems the best budget bet, money is an issue as we arn't that well off, even though Independant. I'll have another look at Warehouse Express (Where I got the camera from).
Cheers,
Dave
