Barney...you will have to purchase a Leica-Nikon adapter, also assuming of course, the adapters are compatable for Digital Nikon.. Now it's a real bargain.

sounds cool, but what does it mean? how can the f number be smaller than one? I thought 1 was the maximum, i.e, fully open, so how can it me more than that? Or have I misunderstood the science behind this?
Cheers

(Assuming I had mega cash) I'd be more likely to part with my moola for this little minx.

Marvellous!! A good excuse for Geoffrey Crawley to repeat his classic review of the fastest standard primes for the 35mm full frame way back when in the BJP. I think I remember his review was titled "One two" and appeared in the 5 December 1969 issue shortly after I'd bought my Minolta SRT101. F1.2 lenses from Minolta, Nikon and Leitz were tested along with the Canon FL version, with two variants of the Canon f1.2 FD a short time later. In the later test, the aspherical Canon 55 f1.2 AL was clearly superior to the "ordinary" 55 f1.2 FD.
Years later I made a special journey to buy my first Minolta 50mm F1.4 to find that it had been sold, but that I could have a f1.2 for a few pounds more. I jumped at the chance, and found that whilst not marvellous at full aperture, it made f2.8 really usable on the then contrasty slide film as vignetting was more or less absent, at least compared with my 55 f1.7 Rokkor. I sold the f1.2 a decade later to help fund purchase of my EF 85 f1.8.

F-numbers are the ratio of focal length to aperture diameter (correctly they should be written as 1:0.95,1:1.8 etc). A lens with a maximum aperture of f1 would have an aperture diameter equal to it's focal length. An f number of 0.95 for this lens simply means the diameter of the aperture is slightly greater than the focal length which allows a bit more light in.
In theory there's no limit as to how big the aperture can relative to the focal length but in the real world it's limited by practical considerations such as chromatic and spherical aberrations, size, material and manufacturing limitations etc. If you search round these forums you will find mention of at least one cine lens with an even bigger maximum aperture - something like 0.75 or bigger IIRC...
More info on f-numbers form Wikipedia...

Effing expensive unfortunately! Then again, so are the other pair of forthcoming Leica optics - a 24mm and 21mm, both f/1.4, both apparently will cost £3990 apiece.

Perhaps, but then they are worked on assiduously night after night after night after night by a team of germanic elves and pixies who come out after dark and set to using magic dust and fairy liquid to give these lenses a magical touch.

Thats just obscene! 4 grand for a 24mm! Not just cos its f1.4 (an impressive feat nonetheless) but cos its a Leica!

Its the cost of building things in Germany, Larry. If production was switched to China you'd probably be able to lop a grand off at least.

They've always been German, but they did have a manufacturing operation in Midland, Ontario - and one in Portugal, for that matter.

Leica work to their own standards... the price for such a lens includes a high proportion of R and D because very few will ever be made to recoup those costs.
If you are very rich and just want the best the price is not important. After all, some filthy rich buy football clubs and players to go along with it.
Compare to that, a Leica lens is petty cash.
