The recently announced Canon EOS 5D Mk II will use higher capacity BP type batteries (LP-E6) which will enable information about discharge and percentage remaining charge to be shown on the LCD. Does anyone know if the LP-E6 batteries (which have recessed terminals) can be charged on the Canon CA-PS400 dual charger? Will BP-511A batteries be compatible with the 5D Mk II? There may be a clue here in the fact that there is to be a new battery grip for the 5D Mk II in the form of the BG-E6 (my 5D uses the BG-E4), presumably because of battery differences ... anyone know the answer yet, please?

I think they said the batteries were not compatible. No word on the charger, but I guess it's the same.

(the same as in it's not compatible, just like the batteries!)

This may help...
Extract “Even though they appear similar, the previous-generation BP-511A batteries are not interchangeable with the new LP-E6 battery pack, and cannot be exchanged for one another. The new EOS-5D Mark II requires the LP-E6 battery pack, and cannot accept the older BP-511A or similar Canon batteries. Likewise, the new LP-E6 cannot be used in the previous EOS 5D, or other EOS bodies which accept the BP-511A battery pack.”

Thanks John (and to others who responded) - the issue seems pretty unequivocal so I guess this thread stops here. Regards, Rupert

Hi Rupert,
I was just at a Canon Training show (for 5D Mk II and others) and found out an interesting fact about the LP-E6 battery (and the new 5D) ... there is a serial number in/on the battery and it will communicate with the camera so if you have several batteries you can put the battery in the camera and not only tell how juice it has left (before needing charging) but how much life the battery has before it is time to purchase a new battery
BTW, I should mention that this was in Vancouver, BC .
Cheers,
Jack

Oh noes intelligent batteries, or in others words how Canon wants to stop you using better cheapo batteries from the net.
