Greetings to one and all. My first post though have been following the threads on this forum for a while. Okay: here goes. After much browsing and shop testing I bought a 40D a week ago and have to say I’m over the moon. The live view is a real bonus for table top work and the shutter is almost a whisper in the street (I did say almost). I bought a 35/f2 + 50/1.8 (both Canon) as well and the 35/f2 is as I remember, a cracking lens. But: I can’t say the same for the 50/1.8 as it appears to be very un-sharp right from the off at 1.8 and does not really improve that much at f8-11. This is the plastic MK11 version I believe, the one I had before (25 years past) was an all metal job and I remember it being a terrific piece of glass. I’m obviously going to return the 50/1.8 for a replacement (not too sure if I want another MK11 though) but I just wondered if any of you had found the same or heard of a similar story as I have always thought Canon to be up there with the best in terms of quality consumer lenses. Oh: Before I forget. Is there a delay setting for the viewfinder information; I can’t seem to find anything about it if it does exist. I count approximately 4 seconds and its off. At my age and with my eyesight, I need a little more time to work things out Regards. Zed.

The plastic 50mm lens is optically the equal of the earlier version. I would suggest that you have a bad copy, the best course of action being to return it to the supplying dealer as you have stated, asking for an exchange, along with some comparisons with the 35mm lens at similar magnifications. I had a copy of the later 50mm lens and it was excellent, but I replaced it with the earlier version when I found a used example at a reasonable price.

Zed,
Oh FFS, there's NO optical difference between the the plastic-bodied MkI and the plastic-bodied MkII versions. OK, the MkI has a metal mount and a distance scale, but at £50-60, what's to complain about?
OK, you may have bought a 'Monday-morning' product, exchange it for a new one, or go on eBay and buy a MkI at twice the price.
Your 'whinge' is not new and is probably influenced by what you have read on the internet, please post some of your images so that we can visually see what your problem is.

Chill Bob, it's not the usual plastic mount moan
Greetings Zed, as suggested it sounds like you've a duff copy of the lens...get another copy from your dealer as it should be very sharp at f/8-f/11 as you expect.

Hopefully not everybody will greet you with such an aggressive hello and welcome to the forum. Quite often a lot of people are rather helpful... just not always. It would appear you do have a bad example (of lens)

I don't have a problem, but obviously you do! Try some Diazepam mate! Or get out more! ‘Oh FFS.’ Such a warm welcome from across the border! And they have the nerve to say that we in the south are unfriendly Oh well; life goes on! Maybe someone stole his porridge this morning
And to those who took the trouble to reply courteously, I thank you. Though I think (after a quick test) it’s the camera
As I said, life goes on
Thanks for the experience Byeeeeeeeeeee

Afternoon Bob; Thanks for replying. As far as I can see, page 125 only refers to 3" LCD screen. I'm after the little bugger that controls the 'Viewfinder information' time/delay. As I said, I count approx 4 seconds before it goes out which is ok-ish but 8 would be better. Cheers. Zed.

You could try keeping the shutter button half pressed?
Would that do it?
It goes off after 4secs as a battery saving aid

Diazepam is not too good an idea if you need sleep. You don't want to interfer with your REM sleep and dreams! Dreams are the reason we sleep and without them we die. It may sound crazy but a half Piriton tablet will put most people's lights out and allow them to dream. I know that Piriton is just an anti-histamine but it works. In my life as a psychologist I try to deal with the sleep problems most folk seem to have! "Sleep that knits up the ravelled sleeve of care" but Shakespeare didn't know about the importance of dreams.

Checked the manual and a few forums.
You can't adjust the amount of time the viewfinder display is on for.

Drats I just knew it would be so! Strange thing to omit I think considering the 40D's cost and spec. Yep, guess I'll just keep hitting the shutter button. Now I'm off to sort the focussing. Thanks Fen.

Thanks for taking the time to look Bob, nice of you anyhow. Funny omission though considering its rank and file. Cheers. Zed.

Gerry,
Just to let you know, and all the others, I have sent Zed a PM apologising to him for my response to his viable query.
I also apologise to you, and anyone else who my message upset, sorry.
What I will say though, is that there is very little wrong with the EF 50mm f/1.8 Mk I and it does not deserve the criticism it receives her and elsewhere, especially for the VFM it offers. Having used both versions of the lens, I find that there is no optical difference. The Mk I may have a metal-mount, but this is averse to rusting, whereas the the Mk II is not
Once again, apologies if my reply offended anyone, especially Zed.
Bob

Bob.. since I first came on this forum I have seen quite a few replies that were less than helpful. It doesnt take much of a person to be rude, unhelpful or offensive but it takes a much better person to appolgise so readily. It really is much appreciated regards gerry

Greetings all. For those that may have noticed a slight tiff within my first post, all is now sorted. As Gerry said 'It doesn't take much of a person to be rude, unhelpful or offensive but it takes a much better person to apologise so readily.' Totally agree and matter now closed and am looking forward to receiving my first Christmas Haggis
Okay:Now the important bit. Took my 50/1.8 back the other day and just waiting for replacement. No problem returning said 50 as been buying in same shop for donkeys. Probably nothing wrong with it anyway
Now:In the mean time I stuck a Sigma 18-50 2.8 IF and a Tamron 17-35 2.8 on the 40D and, well, I'm perplexed, I mean, am I asking too much or looking at things the wrong way as when I focus through liveview all is pin sharp but take the picture and it's soft. Everything seems to creep up a bit better once past 5.6 but nothing breathtaking.
My K10D with 50/1.7A is pin sharp all the way and I expected nothing less from the Canon set up. True I'm no Terence Donovan, but I can tell sharp from unsharp at 100 meters, and in the fog too
I purchased the 40D in preference to the K20D because of superior shutter (quiet and 6FPS) and the brilliant/ superior live view function.
Shop were I bought 40D from has no problem replacing it if I feel the need to do so but, well, before I cry wolf, can anyone offer a reason, a clue, a test that will identify the fault/problem? Failing that; I'm off to.........specsavers in the morning
Byeee. Zed.
