They are both very good cameras and similar in some ways (they both use the same Sony sensor for instance) but very different in others, (the Nikon has live-view, the Sony has inbuilt body image stabilisation for instance). The Nikon is on average a couple of hundred quid dearer - plus the Sony body has a £100 cash back until the end of this month so the net difference could be the price of a decent lens.
I doubt if you'll find anyone here who owns, has owned or has even used both cameras extensively. Without such experience any comments could only be based on second-hand knowledge, reading test reviews, hearsay or plain old brand allegiance - not much use to you really.
I'm afraid you going to have to read all the reports you can find, look at the specifications and the cameras themselves and trust your own judgement

And just as important... Handle both of them.
If the camera doesn't feel right in your hands then it will never feel right.
And if you're uncomfortable with the camera, you will use it less.

Yes I've always been an earlier riser .. can't stay in bed after about 5.00am
Body IS a major factor for me too ... EVERY lens .. including macros and wide primes.

I think that with the new firmware, the A700 is very close to the Nikon D300 in image quality, from the samples I have seen. The A700 is also a few hundred quid cheaper although it doesn't have live view and is 1.5fps slower. But 5fps is more than enough. If you have lenses for both systems you can't really go wrong with either.

Many thanks all for your comments.
Took the plunge and went for the 700 in the end. Was considering the 300 as i've heard great things about it. But as you all point out, with a large investmant in glass, would have been a nightmare.
Many thanks all
Paul.
