I have heard rumours of this before. Still, when a M8 costs £3000, I'd hate to see the price tag for this one.

There was a live link up on the L-Camera Forum to the Leica event taking place tonight in Cologne. Dr Kaufmann made the announcements.

As I write this, the L-Camera server seems to have gone down however, but it's legit honest!!

Press release and DVD with official images have been distributed, so these should be freely available within the hour I'd guess.

I tried the forum a few times earlier on, but couldn't get in. I'll reserve judgement if you don't mind. I like to see whites of their eyes before I believe forum rumours - 99.9% of them prove false in the end. And the idea of a Leica MF camera has been doing the rounds for years despite being denied by Leica themselves. That could have changed, of course, but I'll believe it when I see the official announcement straight from the horse's mouth. As a general strategic approach to forum rumours I've found it to be almost always sound. And when it isn't, there's no harm done. :-)

Anybody can circulate a fake press release. And anybody can put together a DVD with some Photoshopped mock-ups on it. Normally, I believe, manufacturers distribute things like that ahead of time to important websites, magazines, and so on, who are under binding 'Non-Disclosure Agreements' until the appointed hour, so that they can be ready to go live with the news.

And where's Leica's own announcement? Strange, don't you think, that they appear not to have said a word about it on their own website? Or maybe I've missed it - admittedly it's not a site I particularly know my way around.

Okay - seen that now. That's certainly a bit more concrete. But I wonder why no-one else seems to have the news?

And give them out at an official Leica event where the CEO is making a keynote speech??

I acccept the cynicism, but I know enough about the Leica links to L-Camera forum (which not as strong as they were, are pretty sound) to feel confident about these statements.

You reckon? The BJP site says something about 'an exclusive press conference' - sounds more like Leica didn't want the filthy plebs involved!

Please check out how to post a link, and don't paste the address into both boxes - it wrecks the forum shape - thanks, Mod.

Just off to Photokina in a few minutes. I'm looking forward to seeing the new camera even if they won't let me get my hands on it. Way out of my price league though but a welcome development for Leica.
