I have an e-510 with the two standard lenses 14-42 and 40-150. I have tried a bit of action photography and would like a bit more range on the telephoto. There are three lenses I was considering and I wondered if anyone had any experience of them, or any recommendations.

Of the 3 you list I'd go for the 70-300. The other 2 are too slow.
That aside I'd go for one you didn't list, the 50-200mm f/2.8-3.5. I'd go for a good used original model rather than the new SWD to keep the cost down.

I use the 70-300mm on an E500 and I have been impressed with its performance. I have been enjoying reasonable success at airshows and motor-racing in catching fast action with continuous autofocus and often panning. At the Airbourne airshow in August, I was very pleased with the ability of the camera/lens combination to keep up with the Red Arrows (see below). Personally, I think this is a fantastic lens for the money.
This was taken with the 70-300mm fully extended at 1/1600th second at f6.3, ISO 200 and CAF.
Taken with 70-300mm extended to 300mm. Shutter speed 1/640th, f6.3, ISO 200 and CAF.

Thanks Guys
I reckon the 70-300 is probably the best bet within the price range then. I like the look of the 50-200 but even second hand it is beyond my means at the moment

I don't own the 70-300 but I tried it at an Olympus Roadshow and I was really impressed with it, I think it's sharp even wide open. I also had the opportunity to try the 35-100 and 150 f/2 and the 70-300 still looked good even in that company. I know some people have mentioned focussing problems in low light but I think if you are aware of the limitations the image quality itself is very good.
You may have seen this review, if not it's worth a look.
