I've had a 350d since 2005 and am thinking of relegating it to 'spare body' status. I've been trawling the forums and camera mags, and with a budget of up to up to around £500 (body only) the shorlist seems to be 40d or 450d (or maybe the new 1000d?).
With the cashbacks, the 40d is around £575 and the 450d about £400.
What do you reckon would be the best buy? I read on another thread that the 40d may be replaced soon - would it be better to hang on a few months and pick up a discounted 40d body?

Is there anything about your 350D that you don't like, is limiting you in some way or you would prefer to improve on?

^^ ditto what OneTen said
Myself I would not upgrade to a 1000D nor a 450D - though the 40D would be consideration. Personally speaking though I prefer to build up a good lens collection then make a move for something midrange in the body area - the new 50D and 5DM2 (though the 5D was and still is a good choice) - that way you get a much bigger improvment in quality - a noticable difference

One reason for upgrading is that I sometimes have to photo electronics hardware for work. Due to space and access constraints in e.g. server rooms, I can't always get close in to, say, all the cabling into the back of a server. So it's v useful to be able to cut n crop bits from a longer shot. With the 350d at 6Mpx the cut bits are sometimes grainey - so upping it up to 10 - 12Mpx will make the extraced bits of better quality. Plus the digic III sounds good.
I allready have a collection of Canon fit lenses (ranging from Sigma 20mm to an old 500mm cat!) so I can now think about upgrading the body. I'm veering towards the 40d as I like the sound of the magnesium body. A full frame sensor would be nice, but out of my budget range I guess (only 1 of my lenses is an ef-s).
For fun I like landscapes (playing with HDR & photostitch), so hopefully the image quality will be better for that also.

The 450d or 1000d is scarcely an upgrade on the 350d. I would doubt whether you would notice any difference in results. Also these use SD memory, not CF, so you would also need to renew your cards. The only worthwhile gain from such a move would be the larger screen. A 40d would really be a better option if you are determined to buy a body, but it is much larger and heavier than the 350d.
The money would, in my view be better spent on glass.

I know your dilemma - as I have a 350d with few ff lenses but am saving for a full frame 5DII and will only buy lenses that will fit that until I get it
There was a great article in AP a few weeks back that basically said the 350d is still a great little camera and I can only agree with that
keep it until you can get what you really want...

Well, I have the 40D and I've been absolutely delighted with it. The image quality meets all my requirements, the handling is excellent and it has taken several knocks and soakings very well.

The 350D is indeed still a very usable camera, but there are without doubt benefits to upgrading to either the 40D or 450D. There are some benefits to changing to the 1000D too, but that really is aimed at a slightly lower level than the 350D, so probably overall wouldn't make a lot of sense. If you like the size and shape of the 350D and don't have an overwhelming urge to go to full frame in anything like a hurry, the 450D is an excellent camera. On the other hand, if you can't get on with the size and shape but the quality is pretty much good enough, the 40D is an excellent step up both on size and quality. If however you want a lot more, then you'll need to either get a runout 5D, or wait for a 50D or 5D Mk II (assuming they deliver the goods!). I like the 350D, though.

Agreed - but the upgrade from 350D to 450D isn't worthwhile, IMO. The 40D is not far short of the 5D except in low light and for the sensor size - which means the 5D won't accept EF-S lenses, this may be a factor in your decision.
Personally I'd go for the 40D at "runout" price.

Why, precisely? If it's a body shape that's more confortable to the OP, I would suggest it's an excellent upgrade, with a much enhanced specification and performance in just about all areas.

I went for the 40D from the 400D and have no regrets, it's a great camera, plus I felt the 400D a little small in my hands. The 40D feels about right.
According to Canon the 50D doesn't replace the 40D, they sit along side each other. So I wouldn't expect a "runout" price for it but at £575 it's a steal. I got it soon after launch so paid quite a bit more for it. Now I'm in the process of adding good glass before I consider my next body upgrade.
Cheers Simon

If the 40D is still widely available come New Year then I'll believe it otherwise...

Yup, I suspect it's Canonspeak for "we've still got loads of stock of the 40D". Still, it's an excellent camera and already at a very good price.

If the OP doesn't like the bulk & weight of the 40D, it should be ruled out. BTW the 5D won't suit either.
I did say "IMO": what I meant was that though the spec has been upped it's not really enough to justify the upgrade. IMO. The (unannounced, but surely not far off) "500D" might be.

I (still) have my 350d, which still gets used occasionally, but I upgraded to a 40d and what a great camera it is. I am well pleased, it feels very solid with no creaky doors etc and a joy to use with great pictures, highly recommended!

Thanks for the input folks - I think I'll go for a 40d.
