It appears the A900 is now available? Seen one on Ebay, and it's details are on the Sony site

Yes it was officially released last Tuesday 16th and, quite surprisingly, there are already several UK shop saying they have it in stock - cheapest I can find is £1899 body only.

There seems to be loads in the forums comparing the Nikon D700 with the Canon 5D but little comparing the 5D with the a900 which I'd have thought is a more relevant comparison.
To put in my two penny worth the 5D has good high ISO performance. Not much information about the a900 yet although it doesn't go so high. The 5D has live view but as Roger says without an articulated screen it isn't that useful. The 5D does video although I have never tried it on my existing cameras so doubt if that will interest me although it may be useful for some. The big swing point for me is the in-body anti-shake of the a900. I know you can get AS Canon lenses and to be fair they only bring you up to the price of the high end Sony/Zeiss but having AS for everything, I almost never switch it off, is a bit of a clincher. The a900 is currently a bit less expensive but factor in the superb lenses and that disappears. etc etc etc.
My legacy equipment is modest on both Minolta and Canon sides so that isn't an issue so what do others think?

All my lenses are Minolta/Sony fit so there's no chance I will get any other than the a900 - if I can even afford that
I think there's going to the usual groaning about high ISO noise with the Sony .. there was with the a700. I doubt (as the pixel density is similar) the a900 is going to be spectacular in that regard - straight from the camera. I never use high ISO so it doesn't concern me much.
There are shots from the Canon 5D linked on another thread here which at first glance do look remarkably free from noise - that is until you notice also at the lack of detail.
'Tis all horses for courses and what kit one already owns - let's be honest - all current dSLRs are very good
