I have 2 of these cards in my D3, at 4gig each. I connected the camera via usb, deleted some photos in windows Vista at some stage. Not many photos after disconnecting the usb, I suddenly recieve a CD flashing, which means no more space which is impossible at 24 photos or so. Is this because I deleted photos in software, not in camera? Should users always format and delete in camera to avoid errors?

Try formatting your cards in the camera, you should find the work correctly. You should only connect your camera to a computer to download the images, or for remote control. Treat the cards in the same way you would film, fill them up, transfer the contents and format in camera, and you won't go far wrong.

I've never had any problems deleting photos via the camera or via the CF card in a card reader(then sticking the CF card back in the camera).
I've deleted ALL photos on the card via a card reader....and I've formatted IN the camera...still no problems.
I did have one issue where my last two or three pictures I took could not be read or opened correctly in either the camera or the card reader....but it was a card "seating" issue. I didn't seat the card in the camera of the reader firmly enough. I have two Sandisk and one Toshiba card.

Then you are very fortunate but it is generally recommended that you format memory cards in camera and not with the computer. I can't think of any reason why it might be necessary to delete images from a memory card individually except in the camera when getting short of space. Obviously others have reasons that I haven't thought of.
All I can say is that my process is to transfer all the images from the card to the computer, and then either format in camera or, if I need the images before filling the card, simply reinsert and carry on shooting. I may be strange but I never delete files, however bad, simply because few of them are so bad that nothing is usable. I normally carry around 20GB of cards so storage isn't generally a problem.
