D300 problem, or finger trouble?
      #705808 - 13/09/2008 15:20

I have a strange "problem" with my D300

In aperture priority mode, when the shutter speed falls below about 1 second, the word "Lo" appears in the viewfinder, and on the top LCD screen, and the exposure meter display flashes. However, if a picture is taken, the shutter speed is correct, i.e can go up to several seconds.

Why is the camera displaying "Lo"? I thought this meant that the exposure was out of the camera;s capability, but this is clearly not the case.

Does anyone else find this, or have I enabled some obscure setting somewhere? it's quite annoying as for long exposures, you have no idea how long the shutter speed is going to be!

The light level is outside the light meter's EV range (which is 0-20 EV for 100 ISO, see page 408 of the user manual), the camera will still be able to expose reasonably but accuracy isn't guaranteed.

Thanks.

Yes, that must be it, but it is strange that none of my other DSLRs have done this, and my F80 film camera just keeps on increasing the shutter speed displayed as the light reduces (e.g. by successively reducing the aperture)

Are they Nikons? I just tested a D40 and it does the same as your D300, and IIRC the D70 & D200 also do the same.

I don't remember my D80 and D70 doing this, but I could be mistaken.... I know My F80 doesn't do this.

It just seems a little strange - if the metering works well enough to set a speed of several seconds, why not display it? (maybe in a flashing mode or similar to warn of reduced exposure accuracy)

Thanks for checking your D40

My D80 did it, go on RTFM, you know it makes sense.

my D300 doesn't do what you describe. I've just tested it on ISO L 1.0, aperture priority and matrix metering. As I wind the shutter up, the metering hits 'Lo' only after the shutter speed has passed 30s.

I don't think either my D70s or F80 do that either <tests D70s and F80>. Nope.

Test in very subdued light (or partially cover the front of the lens), the EV level needs to be below 0 (for ISO 100).

Thanks Richard

Your post has prompted me to find the cause of the "problem"

<turns red with embarrassment>

My camera was in spot metering mode (I had inadvertently left it there since last time I used it)

What a pillock! (easily done, I suppose....)

Thanks to everyone who posted!

I'm off to check the other settings, now!

Spot metering mode changes the light meter's sensitivity range to EV 2-20 (for ISO 100). "LO" can still appear in any metering mode, it'll just appear in slightly brighter light when spot metering is used.
