Adaptive ISO.

Adaptive ISO.

This rumour site - web page
lead me here - web page

For those who don't want to follow the links, the PDF in the second link describes an adaptive ISO system in which a minimum and maximum ISO range is set and each pixel is then allocated the most suitable ISO. The advantage seems to be that noise in shadow areas is controlled and highlight detail is preserved. I had previously thought that the various highlight priority systems appearing in later model DSLR's might eventually give advantages but this adaptive ISO thing seems to offer a better chance of achieving a good exposure.

It's all very interesting, I wonder if it will take off? What do you think? Good idea?

Errr.... isn't it exactly the same as fiddling with levels?

I don't think so.

Changing the ISO and changing levels are different things aren't they?

Changing the ISO is multiplying the electron count in the well in every pixel sensor by the same amount. Changing the level through curve mapping is multiplying the electron count by a variable amount depending on what's there. In other words, varying the effective ISO rating of every pixel sensor depending on how much light it's shown.

Really I don't see the difference between that and what is proposed in "adaptive ISO".

I do. I think it'll be an interesting development.

I'd rather set the ISO and then take a shot than take a shot and then fiddle with the curves. Each to his own I suppose. As sensor low light peformance gets better I can see a range of 100-800 being no problem at all.
