looks interesting,But how small can cameras go, and still be comfortable to hold? [Some of us have large hands.]

Hmmm....... not exactly what I suspect many were/are hoping for....
It's not what I'd call significantly smaller than the current E420, certainly not what I'd describe as a pocketable camera. I hope Olympus can do better.

You have to ask what is the point, looking at the weight and dimensions it's hardly a massive difference compared to the E-420!
E-420 - 129.5 x 91.0 x 53.0mm weight 380g
Lumix-G1 124 x 83.6 x 45.2mm weight 385g
It's actually heavier. only half a cm narrower, not quite as high or as deep.
the worst thing though it that it's an ugle b*gg*r! I was hoping for a nice sleek design like some of the mock ups we've seen.
Very disapointed!

I was expecting....well more.. or in this case less, not much smaller or lighter than the E-420..dissapointing after all the "micro talk", and shoe horning anothe 2MP on the sensor cannot be good for noise above ISO 400 but guess not a prob for ex compact users and whats with the DSLR like hump, thats not good for slipping into a pocket!
Lets hope Oly can come up with something smaller and better. Sorry for sounding so negative but it just my initial feeling after all the hype.

I agree it's a little bit ugly but I will say this, it's certainly not menu drive, look at all the direct control buttons and a front command dial. Ok it's a pity they hadn't made it like a minature DMC-L1 rather than a DMC-L10 (I think thats the right models)
I could be tempted, I like the red one

There are more images HERE. It looks more like a bridge camera to me, I was expecting something closer to a scaled down Lumix L1.

I agree, the L1 style would have fitted it better.
Looking at it again, I think it's the lens that is wrong, it just looks too bulky. That and the flash hump!
Control wise it's very promising!
Just wish it was a bit more sreamlined. It looks like a dSLR wannabe!

What I'd hope Olympus go for is something along the lines of the old E300/330 design but smoother (without the grip lump - or at least a more E420-ish size) and considerably smaller. Ideally I'd like to see the body have a smooth, projection free design and no bigger than a late model 35mm compact - coupled with some compact prime lenses.
Panasonic look to have aimed this model squarely at the bridge camera market where as long as they don't over-pixellate the sensor (fat chance I suspect) it could do well.
Of course what I really want is Olympus to launch a compact with the 4/3rds sensor...........but I guess I'm going to be waiting a while yet.

Just realised that although it has a front command dial it doesn't have a rear one, great, It's just lost a point IMO.

There is an image with Richard Sibley acting as model and holding the G1 in the AP that arrived today. It doesn't look to chunky as in the releases i have seen.
What was really interesting was the short article that accompanied it. The thoughts of planning manager of Panasonic Mr Uematsu. He stated that the quality of images recorded by four thirds is about to take a significant jump. Noise will be controlled more effectively and read out speeds more efficient.
Next weeks AP will have more details.
Hype or Holy Grail?

Interesting as it is, just what has this got to do with Olympus chat? Best to all. David.

It's a concept that both Olympus and Panasonic have adopted. I suppose as this is the 1st m4/3rds product it's of interest to Olympus users as a pointer to what we might expect Olympus to release at some stage. In fact it's probably of more interest to Olympus users. It's similar to Pentax/Samsung DSLR's being discussed in both forums.

I'm reluctant to agree with ElSid ;-) but yep, Panasonic's interpretation of M4:3 isn't quite what I wanted to see. I hope someone at Olympus is working on something different!

Well, this is all jolly interesting. Certainly, the G1 isn't quite what some were expecting, nor is it what some were hoping for, but it does have appeal. This is just the opening salvo of the M4/3rds story and I suspect there are many chapters ahead. If the IQ is there, amateurs are going to find themselves asking the question "why carry anything bigger?" Small, discreet, high-quality miniature photography is highly desirable IMO; not for everyone, I know, but for many.
Love the different colours!

I first found the information on an Olympus US based Four Thirds Forum, the editor of that site gave the news great prominence on his site even though the product is not Olympus but it is part of a growing successful family. There are reasons for and against the item being placed here.
