Hi. I would like to purchase a 580EX Speedlite to use with my Canon 350D. I see Canon have issued 2 models, the 580EX MkI and MkII. What are the main differences between the two. I understand the MkII is probably the better one, but what would I lose if I bought the older model rather than the MkII? (I would mainly use the flashgun to shoot portraits, and other similar fill-in applications). Many thanks. Benji

I doubt you would notice much difference in use.
The MK11 has a metal shoe, weather proofing, a PC socket for external sync. and is less noisy, custom functions of flash gun may be set by the camera (1D MK111 and later digic 111 processors). Oh and it can do conventional auto flash as per the flash guns in days of old.
Same power, same zoom range, same range of strobe and power level options.

The advantages of the Mk II are marginal. What you will really need is some kind of diffuser which will give you a good portrait light.
