Hi all
I ordered Hoya filters for my new Olympus 510 before I went away but they arrived after I'd set off. As I feared, my skies are a bit washed out. I wondered if any of the (cheap or free) editing packages have a graduated ND filter tool.
Thanks

Do have an editing package currently? The GIMP is very versatile and very free or Photoshop Elements is relatively inexpensive (compared to it's bigger brethren anyway). Alternatively PaintShopPro offers a lot for the money too.
There are several ways ways to create a graduated filter in post editing. Simples is to create a blank layer above the main image and use the graduated fill tool to overlay black or some other colour over the area you wish to darken. Set the blend mode of this layer to darken or luminosity and adjust the layer's opacity to taste.

Thanks. I have Picasa, which is very easy to use but limited in its tools. I've just downloaded a trial version of elements 6 so I'll see how I get on.

Elements 7 is due to be released in the next few weeks (you can Google it to find the exact date, no doubt), so evaluate version 6 but, for me at least, I'd not part with any money until version 7 is on the shelves.

If your skies are "washed out", it is unlikely you will be able to bring any detail back. Remember the old transparency film rule - expose for the highlights rather than taking a general exposure reading. It is simpler to extract some detail from the underexposed portions of your picture that to put detail back into over-exposed portions.
