With Photokina, the world's largest imaging exhibition opening two weeks today, I'm wondering what, if anything, Nikon will be announcing to have the punters foaming at the mouth in anticipation.
We've had the D700, the D90, the SB-900, a few new consumer zooms (I lose track, if I was ever on it), the already announced 45mm and 85mm T/S lenses and (presumably) this season's P&S efforts.
So are Nikon clearing the decks for something big, bigger even than the presumed companion to the D3, the D3x? Something medium format to rattle the Hasselblad and Phase One cages? A rangefinder to show Leica how it should be done? Or will they play safe with a 50mm f1.8 AF-S G lens?

I've heard they're apparently introducing an MX (medium) format system.
Not sure how true that is, though the images I've seen look pretty real, or why Nikon would bother when they can't even update their prime lenses.

All those D40/D40x/D60 users are missing out on the joys of AF on a Nifty Fifty, but I doubt that there's an AF-S version of the 50mm f:1.8 coming out and I'd be surprised if the f:1.4 got an AF-S motor.
I think the one lens Nikon need to launch is an FX compatible 70-200 AF-S f:2.8 but whether they've had the time to develop one since the launch of the D3 showed up the full frame limitations of the existing model I'm not sure.

Too niche to be cost effective.

Why go to the cost of putting a motor into an £80 lens? The 1.4 is a much better candidate. If they have solved the problems of VR with such a fast medium lens so much the better; but it will cost.

Apart from some poor beggar with the shakes, who needs VR on a 50mm lens (especially one with a 1.4 aperture)? If the light is that dim, turn the speed up a bit.

It remains my opinion that eventually all Nikon lenses will be AF-S, or at least carry the AF drive on board, and that eventually all Nikon SLRs will lose the in camera motor. Having said that, and bearing in mind Nikons generally slow evolutionary rate of change, I don't think it's about to happen overnight.
Of course they could be holding back a surprise for Photokina itself.......
