First post,
I had an unexpected windfall from the taxman recently so being sensible I spent some of it on an E420 as I wanted to get into photography again (Now I have time having finished studying).
However I was playing with it last night (the last SLR I used was an OM1) and have managed to screw up all of the settings and it now reads that I cant take any pictures as there is not enough light.
How do I clear all of the settings and get it back to no added settings so I can learn what each thing does.
Wish my first post was a set of cool pics but at the moment I have a door stop which doesnt take good pics.
Thanks all

You could try reading the manual to see how to do a default reset. (Page 30?)

try
menu O1 custom reset setting reset
and the factory defaults should be restored
I have onty tested this on a 510 but am sure that it works on the 420 also, however note that this option is greyed out when the dial is set to "auto" - you will need to set it to P

Reading the manual in a quiet room with a pint of beer and no other distractions usually helps.
Try this though taken from another site re E420
"One last thing to try, a reset of all settings to factory default. First turn off the camera and remove the lens. Then put the lens back on. This ensures that the electrical contacts are all seated properly. Then turn the camera on and follow the instructions on how to do a factory reset that are on the top of P. 30 of the instruction manual. After you do that, you'll have to go back through the menu system to reset any of your previous settings that you wish to continue to use. In particular, be sure and set Live View AF mode to AF sensors per the instructions on P. 37
No, it doesn't matter what shooting mode you're in. If you've gone through all the settings I've recommended and the procedures above and you cannot get your camera to do an exposure lock, it is malfunctioning. If you just purchased it, I'd suggest exchanging it for a new one with whoever you bought it from. If that is not feasible, Olympus will fix it for free if you send it to the service center whose address is on the warranty card with a description of the problem. Call them before sending in the camera and talk to a service representative for the E-520 who may have some diagnostics for you to run through before sending the camera in. Also, be sure and ask him what you should do to prep the camera for shipment (basically take all removeable items off of it including lens, battery, CF card, hot shoe cover etc.)"

Afraid it does as the factory reset is not available in auto mode. Presumably to protect beginners from themselves.
The rest of the advice is excellent

Thank you all for the advice,
Yes, this beginner forgets she is a beginner to Digital photography, and its not as easy as I thought to transpose all knowledge. Oh well.
I will have another go between now and the weekend and then return to the supplier for replacement/repair.
If it doesnt work after one beer, do I keep going with the beer

Thank you for trying to help,
I have done all of the above, and what Olympus Support have said, there is still no difference. It is currently flashing 80 & F5.6 (I could sort that with the OM1, but times move on . Still no way of taking pictures.
Any other suggestions (if I have missed something obvious, please let me know - feel very stupid atm)

I am going to ask a very stupid question - Have you got the scene dial set to M?

Just another thought, is it on timer by mistake. ie 12 sec delay when you press shutter.

You could always make a pin hole camera out of empty beer can if all else fails.

If you haven't done so already try removing the battery and leaving it out for 5-10 minutes. There's no guarantee that this will work but sometimes it will release cameras that have electonically locked themselves up...

Thank you for all your help and ideas, I tried all of them to no avail, and packed it all away to take back to the shop.
The store was very helpful, and we tried every combination of things on my camera, then we compared with the display model, and then tried my lens on the store model.
Bingo! Faulty lens as the same issues were repeated on the store camera. I now have a new one to play with and look forward to playing this evening.
(I would recommend the store for the excellent customer services - the assistant was really helpful and tried everything to help) - I thought it was going to end up as a contractual row regarding sale of goods etc.
Will go and take some pics at the weekend now I know its not my ineptness as a photographer.

It was Currys (surprisingly, as I have heard stories about their service which would make you cringe)
Very helpful, stayed until the problem was resolved, rang his boss to get further information, and then exchanged for a new one.
