"Format" or "Delete All" on an EOS 5D?
      #688901 - 09/08/2008 14:06

I've done a search but can't find this particular problem listed. Normally I do a Delete All on my 5D's CF card with a Format every month or so.

I've now taken around 11,500 images on my 5D, and for the last six months since passing 10,000, I've been recording them to a folder number 101, rather than to the starting default folder 100. I use Downloader Pro and I've got one of the tokens set so as to concatenate the last digit of the folder number in front of the image number. This preserves the full image number for me e.g. 11501, and gives the right image number for other bodies which have yet to exceed the 10000 point.

I'm reasonably certain that in the last six months, I must have done an in-camera Format on the CF card without deleting folder 101, but last week when I did this, folder 101 was deleted, and folder 100 re-instated. This led to my image files being numbered 10000 low when uploaded to my PC. Since I spotted what happened, I've checked the manual, and re-formatted a card to check what happens, and yes, folder 101 gets deleted.

So, what do other people do, and is there a way to preserve folder 101 on my CF card during an in-camera format.

My images go to directories (folders) with the shooting date in the name, and I'm unlikely to take 10,000 images in a day so I'm not bothered.

I'd always "format" rather than "delete all" because of the much lower number of writes needed to finish the job.

Its a bit late so sorry if I've missed the main point of your post!

As far as I an remember, a formatting the CF card will have the affect of deleting all the user data on the card (folders, images, settings) then recreate the default folder, which I think contains "100" in its name on a Canon camera (all the other makes I've tried).
If you want to use folder named "101", I think you'll have to recreate after each format.

Personally speaking, I prefer to format my cards rather than delete / delete all ever since I lost a load of images when my CF card went on the wonk after a major deleting session during early days of my dSLR ownership.

Thanks guys for your replies.

I also store my images in date (and place/subject matter) labelled folders, but occasionally I'll put a collection of images on to CD where a unique number can be useful. Now that I know what's going on, it's not a big problem on the 5D on which new folders can be created at will. On my 30D more user (i.e. via my PC) intervention may be required if I get to a similar point. Very unlikely now, as it only tends to get used when I loan it out.

Malcolm, is there not an option under the menu which allows the option of either using continuous numbering or resetting each time? Both my D30 and 20D cameras number the folders sequentially and maintain the sequence even after formatting. It's a long time since I set them up and I haven't got the cameras here to check but I'm pretty sure I set the camera to continuously number via a menu option...

You haven't by any chance had to do a camera reset have you? I suspect that the default condition for numbering is to reset on formatting.

Until I noticed this "problem" last week, I hadn't bothered checking what each of my Canon bodies offers in detail in this area. My early 10D, 30D & 5D all offer Continuous or Reset(Auto/Manual for the 30D & 5D) but only the 5D offers, in camera, the option to the user of manually creating a new folder - Next in sequence. If necessary, all of them will create the next folder in sequence at a roll-over point.

Not that I can recall since the 10,000 roll-over point occurred.
I did spend quite some time with Downloader Pro researching which was the best way to customise it in view of my wanting sequential image numbers for each of my bodies, and I wanted Downloader Pro to work completely automatically. My first attempts had me having to choose the "recipe" options depending on whether the body had done <10,000 or >10,000 images. Finding the right token ("%r5" for other Downloader Pro users) has now made the transfer and numbering completely automatic until I exceed >99,999 images on a body. Not very likely, I expect.

Checking back through the manuals for my DSLRs in this area shows as much evolution here as in pixel count! My latest body has two different cards with yet more complexity.
