Vuescan v Epson software
      #688685 - 08/08/2008 22:11

With my new V350 scanner, the free Vuescan software produces very poor results compared with Epson's own. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong, but I'm quite happy with the Epson so far

Neg scans are very slow however

Any chance that your connection to your PC is slow? USB, rather than USB 2? I've got a suspicion that despite my PC claiming USB 2, some of the terminals run at USB speeds. You could try reducing the resolution for less important scans.

I too am quite happy with the software on my Epson 4870 scanner, and it's years since I played around with Vuescan.

Thanks malcolm

don't think it's the USB since photo scans are pretty quick at 800dpi (c.10 secs). The problem is only with the neg scans.

I'd guess that you're scanning your negs (and slides?) at around 2400dpi, so that's going to take 3 times as long as an 800 dpi scan.

Maybe, but I can't open the scanner after a few hours break.

I use a V700 and Vuescan, which I've used since getting my first Epson scanner.

With regard to speed, I did find that my scan times halved when I installed more RAM, so I don't know if this could be an issue.

I find the DNG RAW option with Vuescan on my 4490 is great. There can be too many options in Vuescan and hence a wealth of potential pitfalls, but I tend not to fiddle too much.

Thanks for the help. I think that RAM may be an issue. In any case the unit seems faulty - it scans photos ok but not negs. If I can't get it to work today I will have to return it.

What's more, looking at the hundreds of old snaps remnds me how very few are worth scanning in at a high dpi.
