I don't think that this would be that much of a draw for sports togs. Personally, I'd much rather have a trigger release mechanism than a monopod which is more compact when not in use and I suspect that this feature would be of more use to a sports tog too. Now, if it had the trigger release and compacted down to 41cm I might be interested, but over £200 for a monopod is a hell of a lot.

Even for a Gitzo, it's positively eye-watering! But I suppose that's carbon fibre for you. My aluminium Gitzo monopod cost only 1/3 of that price, but it's heavy enough to crack skulls with, and certainly doesn't collapse down to anything like 41cm. At that size you can fit it into aircraft hand-baggage, so if you're going to travel much with a monopod I guess it would be worth it.

I read the spec, and thought it sounded perfect. Then saw the price...

Don't get me wrong, there's certainly a place for a (well priced) small, light and sturdy monopod but I just can't see it being sports togs who'll be rushing to pick one up.

But they may well be able to convince the agencies who employ them, to foot the bill instead!

With hand-rails or some form of wall already being in place, I'd suggest a bean-bag or/and large adjustable G-cramp with a 1/4" thread plus a ball/pan-tilt head on it, might well do the job instead.

On the other hand, what are the odds on the stadium's press areas having mounts already installed?

The Chinese wouldn't want a Pro Tog with a large lens to lug around a tripod/monopod so they can photograph anything 'Unsupervised' would they?!!!

In the main, there are no such rails and walls to use for togs at event such as the Olympics. Also you'll often see them having compacted the monopod carrying the lens on their shoulder and hold onto the monopod for support so the extra length is a bonus. Added to that, I'd bet that the additional screws required to be turned to extend/comapct it would put them off.

What has the Company "888" got to do with the Olympics branding of these monopods? Surely the 5-ringed logo would be more appropriate

I guess 888 will be grinning all the way to the bank on this! Of course, most of us wouldn't have associated them with the olympics unless they do a bit of advertising around the 8th of this month.
Perhaps Gitzo think that having a lucky number (for the chinese anyway) will help people get their cameras into the games

Yes, the 888 logo has far more to do with the games starting on the eighth of the eighth of oh-eight, deliberately so as the Chinese hold the number eight in such high regard, than any connection with the online betting company, (other online betting companies are available)
