Lightroom 2 Problems
      #686540 - 04/08/2008 15:27

Hi, I just wondered if anyone else on the forum is struggling to get Lightroom 2 to work properly. Problems seem to be unable to open it at all, difficulty editing in CS3, and if it allows edits in CS3, failing to save the edited file back into Lightroom. I have also tried it with Photoshop 7 and Elements 5, and can't get that to work either. Lightroom 1.4.1 works perfectly with any version of Photoshop. There are a lot of posts on the Adobe Lightroom forums about these problems, and as far as I can gather, Adobe are trying to solve them.

Norman, I seem to have more success opening after installing as follows.
After unzipping the file, instead of running Install Lightroom 2.exe, open the folder named Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2, and then double-click on file setup32.exe (assuming you are on a 32 bit system, of course). I'm wondering if it was somehow installing the wrong version. I'm not at all sure about this, but it seems to work for me.
After editing in CS3, clicking File>Save appears to save the edited file in the same folder, but not show in the catalogue, which, after watching the tutorial videos on the Lightroom 2 Learning Centre, I think it should do. I haven't tried again with Photoshop 7 or Elements 5, I think it is designed to work with CS3.
It may be slightly different if you have ordered the CD, I am using the 30 day trial.
Please let us know how you get on.
John

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, I've ordered the CD version so I'll wait and see how it goes. I'll let you know after I get it.

Norman, As an afterthought, before you install Lightroom 2, can I suggest that you copy the Lightroom folder, which is in the My Pictures folder and contains the catalogue file, to another drive, so that you know you can restore it should the need arise. Also I created a new folder and named it Lightroom 2, and when I opened Lightroom 2 I directed it to this new folder to create the catalogue. I wanted to keep them seperate as far as possible while I experiment.

Thanks, I do regular backups of the catalogue but will do one just before the install. I want to convert my existing catalogue, I really don't want to have to re-create one for 20,000 or so images.

I am glad I read this post, it's not the first problem I have read about this software. I found a free download but I don't think I will be purchasing a copy of it

OK, my copy has arrived and installed without hitch. The install upgrades your existing catalogue and creates a new one. You can continue with version 1.4 and it's own catalogue alongside version 2 if you want.

Not had any of the problems reported. Opens files into CS3 fine and saves back to Lightroom without a hitch (so far). Having said that there's even less reason to use CS3 now with the new facilities in the 'develop' module.

Love it, so far.

Hi Norman, Glad Lightroom 2 works for you. If you are using CS3 I don't suppose you have had occasion to try the"Export a copy with Lightroom adjustments" option. That is one issue I haven't seen mentioned, but when I try it, the "Edit Tiff" file is created, but the colours are all wrong, almost like posterized. I got to a point where I could use Edit in CS3, but after the edit the file was not imported back into the catalogue, sometimes saying unable to read the file, it may be in the wrong format. However, I found the file had been saved to the original folder, and could be imported by using Synchronise Folder. I gather this is something the Adobe team are working on, and I am sure it will be sorted soon.

Where did you get your copy from Norman? Amazon don't seem to be getting it until the 15th September

Ordered direct from Adobe on 4th August. It didn't arrive until the 19th. I phoned to ask about the delay and was told that they had been 'caught out' by the number of orders. They hadn't expected such demand. You could download the trial version and use that until it turns up or order the download version and they email you the registration code. I wanted the boxed upgrade so waited, I was already using version 1 so it wasn't that urgent to me.

Just tested the 'Edit copy with adjustments' option with the following results.

Select a JPG and 'Edit copy with Lightroom adjustments in CS3'. The file opens in CS3 OK. When saving it creates a TIF file with 'Edit' appended to the filename. The file gets saved to the same disk folder but does not show in the same catalogue folder nor is it stacked with original. Lightroom creates a new catalogue folder with the same name as the original.

You can 'synchronise folder' on the original catalogue folder and the new file will be imported into it's correct place. This anomaly also happens when opening RAW files.

There's a lot of comments appended to the on-line help file here.

Norman,
That is what I find, and as you say it seems to be very common. I suppose now we shall just have to wait a while for Adobe to fix it. I think for now I'll just settle for Export and tick the box in the export dialogue to open in Photoshop
Thanks for your cooperation.

There is a workaround. Add CS3 as the second external editor. Ignore the warning that it's already the first. Use Ctrl-Alt-E to open file in CS3 and you will get the same functionality as LR 1.4. i.e. you won't get the new extra options. This works when saving and the new file does appear in the current catalogue and no phantom folder is created.

The other thing is make sure that CS3 is at 10.0.1 version and that you are using ACR 4.5 in CS3, even if you don't need the new camera support it provides. ACR 4.5 has some fixes that LR2 requires.

Thanks Norman, I have tried that, but the copy file produced has incorrect colours, almost as if posterised, and orientation is incorrect. that also prevents me using it with any other version of Photoshop. I must admit I haven't seen this one mentioned and it has me stumped. Export works fine. As I said earlier, Version 1 works perfectly. I've made sure CS3 and Camera Raw are up to 10. 0.1 and 4.5 respectively. I am giving it a rest now.

My trial runs out in a week, but Amazon aren't getting it for a few weeks after. I've contacted adobe to see if there is anything they can do (as an existing customer), but as yet no answer.

If I have to I'll install the trial on my MacBook and hopefully the library will be fine on my external disk.

Well, I just thought I'd put a mention here that Lightroom 2.1 Release Candidate has just been released. At first look, it appears that it may have cured the problems I was finding with version 2. Although it is no faster to process a raw file, at least it seems to do what it says on the box, so to speak. Looks more hopeful now for the proper release.
