Being the totalitarian state it is China thinks it can ban whatever it sees fit to ban. They could`ve allowed only cameras made in China

Just wait and see what happens in London in 2012, from what I read in AP they seem jumpy enough about photos of the building site.

At the end of the day the IOC needs to be kicked firmly up the arse for ever giving the games to China. Sack the bloody lot of them.

Hmmm, whilst waiting for the accompanying photo of an "enthusiast" camera to appear when I clicked on the link, I wonder if the D80 is used by people in Welsh villages, or to take people of people in Welsh villages, or was it designed in Wales?

Once again the *******s have missed the point, a professional will use whatever equipment is appropriate to the situation, an amateur will use the best that they can afford that may be appripriate to the situation. If a Pro' entered with, say, an Holga or a vintage Box Brownie then those would be deemed to be professional kit, where as if an amateur went having bought some 'L' glass to use that kit would still be amateur. As for what will happen in 2012, it will more than likely take place to empty stadia.

Banning 'professional camera equipment' at the Olympics? . . . . no different to quite a few concerts I've been to recently, only wish they'd ban cameraphones here as well, as an ordinary punter I prefer not to be disturbed/distracted by someone next to me with a camera

There's someone who thinks the stadia will be finished.

Can we rely on the nice Australians to make the same offer (to host the games in Sydney) as they made to the Greeks?

Isn't it already illegal to import cameras and lenses INTO China?
Seriously....I see that a lot on Ebay that sellers can't/won't ship to China for that reason.

"Just wait and see what happens in London in 2012"

I have no doubt that SLR's will be banned. After all only terrorists and paedophiles have them.

Since I don't want to go to the Olympics, either here or in China, it won't be a problem. If it wasn't for the fact that flights into the UK will probably be full I would be tempted to fly away for the duration.

There will be lots of extra flights in and this implies lots of nearly empty aeroplanes going out before the games in 2012. The slots at the London airports are already full so you may have to make your exit at one of the little airfields like East Midlands, or Leeds and Bradford (Yeadon aerodrome) or, heaven forbid, even Glasgow.
Getting back is another question.

Oh I wouldn't expect any problems getting out of Heathrow, it is the getting back that might be a problem.

I do have a problem with the idea of 'professional' kit. Surely its either the user, or the use that something is put to that defines if it professional or not?

I spent an interesting 5 minutes several years ago discussing with security at a concert if my D70 was professional kit or not. I think the security person knew something about photography and we agreed that a D70, whilst being a nice piece of kit wasn't at at pro level and, to my great surprise, I was allowed to take it in.

I'll join you there. I'd rather watch paint dry than watch any olympic games.

However, I approve of events like this which attract massive TV audiences as it frees up British roads, car parks, shops, tourist destinations, favourite photo spots etc. etc. Life outside can really be quite pleasant when most are glued to the TV indoors. More of it please!
