This page might help in understanding some of the abbreviations.

Some abbreviations are specific to certain manufacturers, so searching their own webistes might help. The letters simply state either technology present in the lens (USM - ultrasonic motor) or state where the lens falls in the manufacturers range (such as Canon L lenses or Sigma EX). They can also indicate whether the lens is suitable for both full-frame and APS-C sized sensors (Canon EF-S as opposed to EF, Tamron DI-II as opposed to DI and so on).

It'd probably be quicker to tell us what camera you have and what lens(es) you are looking at/for. There are so many abbreviations out there the mind starts to boggle after a while....

If you look at WDC magazine, they actually have a pretty good, though not complete, list of these on the first page of the lens reviews.
(Oh the shame of it - showing that I actually read the reviews!!!. How will I ever live this down! )

There was a more a less complete version in the issue where we had a feture on lens technology (bar a couple of the more obscure terms).
All I remember is that DL means the lens is damn lovely, and K means it features one (or more) kryptonite elements. That's right, no?

I wonder whether it's possible to take a soft-focus portrait if you're using a USM lens? I think it's a bit of an assumption by the manufacturer that everyone will want to apply an UnSharp Mask whilst taking a picture.

Indeed. And rear focusing? Surely these are just lenses for perverts, no?

After a little online digging, it does indeed appear to be ultra compact.

It's one of the tags Sigma started using in the early to mid 90s, from memory. I've still got a Sigma 75-300 UC APO in Canon fit that I bought at a Sigma demo day at Tecno in Birmingham around that time - it doesn't work with current cameras and is too old to be rechipped, and I couldn't even flog it on ebay last time I tried. That said, it produced respectable quality for the price. It's not what I would call "ultra compact", but ISTR that the 70-210 was pretty small.
