Can anyone recommend a good (and cheaper!) alternative to Oly's BLM1 battery? 7 BLM1 batteries from Oly is equivalent to buying an e520 body It's a mad world!

I have been using a Hahnel version for the past four years and it works just as well for half the price.
I have used them in my Canon's too and they have worked fine, except one which was DOA, but was replaced by my dealer without question.

I use cheap copies from ebay (seller in HK) work just fine in my E-3. Also used them in my E-1 and before that my Nikon D70.

I use a compatible copy bought from 7daysshop.com here
Ireally can not tell the difference between it and the original, and it was VAT free!

I also have used the eBay cheapies with no problems. Oly do advise against - but they would wouldn't they. Best of all is to get a HLD grip of course

I have 1 Olympus, 1 Hahnel and 1 cheapie from ebay. I can't tell the difference between any of them in use. However, I have read that there can be quality control differences in the real cheapies with a possible risk of fire if faulty. Probably a good bargain versus safety compromise is to go for a Hahnel which is a good brand, but still cheaper than Oly. In fact, I've got no idea if this is true, but my dealer told me Hahnel make batteries for Olympus, but then he was selling me a Hahnel at the time!

Not only VAT free Roger but £5.99 each. Sounds like a bargain to me

I have used three of these Uniross BLM1 batteries in my E500 for two years now with excellent results. Perhaps not the cheapest, but a well known name. http://www.batterylogic.co.uk/digital/olympus-BLM-1-replacement-battery.htm

Thanks - some good tips given. Whilst we're on the subject of batteries, do these Li-ion type batteries have a memory (i.e. must be fully charged and discharged the first time) and do they self drain over time?

Supposedly not - in practise there is some drain, but nowhere near as much as NiMH types. Just charge fully the first time, then top up as required; no deep discharge required.

Thanks David. A couple of chaps have already mentioned these. In fact I ordered 2 last Friday and they have turned up today. The first one is on charge as we speak. Between you all I have saved a small fortune. I thank you

Incidentally, what do you guys keep your spare batteries in? I assume the battery contacts should be protected so they shouldn't just be chucked in the bag?

Some of them come with a plastic protector, I have one that came with the E-1 and 1 with the E-3, I'm not sure where the others came from.

Goto 7dayshop.com - I have two of their BLM-1 copies for two E-510 cameras (home and work) and they're both used hard and indistinguishable from the Olympus
