Got a D300, got an iMac, but what software to use? Apple Aperture 2, Capture NX2, Photoshop Elements? What the best option if I want to avoid the expense of Photoshop?

Welcome!
I believe The GIMP is available for Mac OSX. As Open Source software, it's free - you can't get less expensive than that!
It's a fairly complete image editing program - I use it for my more complex editing. Does take some getting to know to get the most from it.

Aperture, Lightroom and Photoshop elements are all available to try for 30 days.
Purely for editing elements is probably better. For organisation Aperture and Lightroom are great (both with editing features - but not a substitute for Photoshop).

With your new iMac you can use iPhoto for organising and browsing but for RAW processing and editing you'll want something better. Aperture and Lightroom are both outstanding and each has its pros and cons, but Aperture is much cheaper. Neither are great for complex cloning and replacing large areas such as skies though. For that, Elements is probably the best choice and its only about £50.
I can't see many reasons for any photographer other than a small number of pros to buy Photoshop anymore.

... but do check if there's anyway you can qualify for an educational discount - the price for CS3 comes tumbling down really considerably if you can.

Thanks for the replies. What I have decided to do, id download the trial version of each and give each a go. Start off with Elements as that seems to be the most widely used. Let you know how I get on.
