I saw the D700 for the first time yesterday and it looked gorgeous. I also saw it with the SB900 which looks a serious bit of kit along with the 14-24 F2.8, i was in love.

I'm sticking with my D300.
I'm getting sick of this race to have the latest camera every year! There comes a point when you have to ask yourself whether your current camera does everything you want.
With my D70, I wanted higher resolution, and more focusing points, in better places
With My D80 I wanted better metering, and a more professional build. Also I have always felt that my perfect camera should have a wall of focusing points so that one can choose the one where your main subject actually is.
With my D300, I can honestly say there is nothing that I find lacking.
Sure the D3/D700 have fantastic low light performance, but the D300 is pretty damn good in 99% of shooting situations I am likely to find myself in!
I could never justify spending £2,500 on a camera and lens (which is what we are talking about for the D700, since none of my DX lenses would work!)
I need to get my photography up to the standards of the camera that I own!
If I had £2,000 burning a hole in my pocket, I would probably go on a photography weekend, or buy a new lens!

£2000 will pay for more than a photographic week end. We have recently had a week in the Pacific Northwest for little over £1000 for two of us (excluding flights).
I am sticking with my D2x bodies for now, the D3 and D700 will come down in price as soon as the D3x is announced, and it will be launched even if not by that name. Both D2x bodies were bought used, it really is difficult to justify buying new just to get the camera a year or so earlier. I still have the F5 bodies for full frame if I really need it.

Had a look at the D700 today, the guy in the shop is convinced he's going to sell me one, I don't think so it's quite a hefty beast and anyway my right angle viewfinder wouldn't fit! That aside the 14-24mm f2.8 lens...Wow what a superb piece of glass but again it weighs as much a the Routemaster piston I use at home as a door-stop!
Toodle pip one and all, Andrew

There was a press 'tog in at work today shooting in our building. He had the D700 and 24-70mm and grip combination. It looked a fair bit smaller than I expected it to, and whilst I couldn't get a hands on, it did look a lot more manageable than I'd imagined. If I were in the market for £3k of DSLR kit, I'd certainly give it a serious look.
