RAIN and the K200D and DA 50-135/2.8 (3 imgs)
      #684891 - 30/07/2008 16:39

As you all -- or a good majority -- know I live in Vancouver which is
famous for "rain, coffee shops, rain, beggars/drug addicts, rain, mountains,
rain, the forthcoming Olympics, rain and, of course, more rain" ... well, after
a drought of 4 or 5 weeks, it finally decided to rain on Tuesday (July 29th)
morning and I took out the K200D and DA 50-135/2.8 to test them agin
the moisture and here are the results:

PHOTO #1 - shot with my IST*Ds and DA 12-24:

PHOTO #2 - shot with my IST*Ds and DA 12-24:

PHOTO #3 - (actually) shot with my K200D and DA 50-135/2.8

I, then, continued on my way through the rain to my bus and on to
work, woo who and the camera has not shown any ill-effects

Cheers,

Jack

So, Jack, you can now personally assure customers that the Pentax weathersealing "does what it says on the tin"!

Nice abstract shot, the last one.

Thanks Alex and, yep, I can assure them BUT I still keep my

all times

So, what would you have said/done if there HAD been some ill-effects?

Warrantee Claim??
(and I wonder if that will work for the majority of us who are'nt in the trade?! ))

If so, please let us know the words to use!!

Hi John,

If there had been some "ill effects" I would have sent it for a
"warranty repair" describing the malfunction along with, of course,
the stores sale receipt and waited for the item (or items ) to
be shipped back all tickety-boo or, in the worse case scenario, receive
a "repair estimate" describing the repair costs along why it wouldn't
be repaired under warranty Then, like yourself and most folks,
I would contact the repair depot and tell them that the items, whilst
being outside in the rain, it was a light rain and only for approximately
10 minutes and, IMO, something that this/these particular "weatherproofed
item/s" should be able to withstand quite easily.

And, FWIW, in all my years of shooting (22 this month and
14 in retail) I have only sent one(1) item in for repair -- a Konica Hexar -- with
was purchased used and then really used by me As a caveat, if I had tried
to send any of my gear in for warranty repair ... generally, after the first six(6) to
twelve(12) months even I had would have my doubts as to the possibility of the
item(s) being repaired under warranty ...

I hope this kind of answers your question

Cheers,

Jack

Does the IST*Ds still work, or was there a small 'Phut' and a puff of blue smoke?

My K10D is 'weatherproof' but none of my lenses are, so if it rains, it's confined to barracks, or use a 'rainsleeve' (The one I bought from HotBlack (David) for the 'London Shoot' and is still in the bag!

Hi Monobod

just curious as i am fairly new to this weatherproof dSLR technology..
are there specific lenses that are weatherproof? if so would you happen to have examples?

I have the GX10 and a Pentax DA 18-250mm (and the standard Samsung 18-55) for my main lens, would this not be suitable to use in the rain?

im not sure i quite understand the point of having a weatherproof body if the lenses aren't!

thanks guys

I was out yesterday with the K10 and Sigma 50-500 in light rain for about half an hour - no useable shots as speeds were too slow, but no ill effects to either piece of kit either!

Hi David,

Nope, the IST*Ds is still alive and kicking and, speaking of
plastic bags, it was raining when I left work tonight (Thurs) and bagged
both bodies and lenses .... better safe than sorry

Hi Sammy,

Hey, that's great .... look forward to meeting you, at some point, next year and, depending
when you are arriving, I can pretty assure you that you might be thinking: "maybe that drought
wasn't so bad afterall" ...................

Cheers and thanks very much (regarding the pics)

Hi Sammy,

These are the weatherproof lenses:

Quote:

The PENTAX DA * series are designed for exclusive use with PENTAX digital SLR cameras. These superior lenses feature tightly sealed, weather-resistant and dust-resistant construction.

> smc PENTAX-DA* 16-50mm F2.8 ED AL[IF] SDM
> smc PENTAX-DA* 50-135mm F2.8 ED [IF] SDM
> smc PENTAX-DA* 200mm F2.8 ED[IF] SDM
> smc PENTAX-DA* 300mm F4 ED[IF] SDM

As for not having 'weatherproof lenses" matched up with the "weather proof bodies";
unfortunately, the weatherproof lenses are more expensive than the bodies
well more expensive than the K200D But, I have to admit that the purchase
of the DA 50-135 lens has been one of the best expenditures I have made ..... thus far

Cheers,

Jack

Hi Dave,

ya gotta take off that polariser on those rainy/cloudy days .... cuz they make your shutter
speeds too slow

I was just speaking to some folks from England and whlist we here in Vancouver are having
rainy cool weather England is, apparantly, having a heat wave ... well, at least,
elsewhere in England

Hello there,
Some time ago [as I think I've already mentioned in this forum ] I left my K10D out, all night, in a thunderstorm [after a rather boozy BBQ].
The next morning I found that the camera was fine but that the standard lens had water ingress & was knackered. Since then I think I've managed to dry out the 'damp' lens [just stuck it on a radiator for a couple of nights]... & it now seems to be OK.... of course only time will tell?

Cheers
John

thanks jack! look forward to meeting you as well!!

are you able to suggest some 'workarounds' for me if im using the GX10 with a non weather proof lens...
ive never looked into this before but are there lens 'sleeves' you can get that will keep the water out?

thanks

ah yes
it appears i have found a solution until i can afford a weatherproof lens

http://www.wildlifewatchingsupplies.co.uk/lens.htm

do you guys have any thoughts on this?

Jack: I am really curious about all this as I have a big passion for wildlife and want to see if i can head into Alaska and the Yukon to photo wolves / bears..etc. lots of snow and ice and rain up there!

This sort of thing works fine, and is what everyone used until weatherproofed cameras and lenses arrived.

Incidentally, I quite happily use my non-weatherproofed DSLR even in quite heavy rain. The secret is simply to minimise exposure, and dry it off as soon as you can. I doubt if it would stand up to being left outside all night in a thunderstorm, but a couple of minutes at a time isn't an issue - I think people are more scared than they need be on this issue.

RAIN the K200D/DA 50-135/2.8 Me in action - the old days (10 img).... [Re: SammyValencia]
      #685688 - 01/08/2008 17:03

Hi Sammy,

The following pic shows my 'workabout' for the last twenty(20) years of shooting in less than
ideal climes....

Not very pretty but cheap and (so far) effective

As for shooting wildlife in Alaska, there are lots of cruises up there and
I am guessing plenty of "wildlife photo tours/expeditions" ... or, if you don't
mind staying within the Vancouver (actually North Vancouver) city limits you can
shoot the following:

and, of course, you can end the day with a ...
.
.
.
.
.... ... with a lovely sunset ... similar to the one shown here

Cheers,

Jack
