Hi,

We have been offered a Nikon D80 or Canon 40D with a lens of our choice as a present!!! ....what an choice!!!

The question is which one would you choose and what lens would you have to accompany it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Whichever one felt best to me. (Assuming I had no "baggage" in the way of existing lenses etc. which I could use with one but not the other, which might affect my judgement ... but then I would probably expect the handling to be like the brand I was used to.)

The kit lens will do for a starter, but IMO for the Canon the 17-85 is a big improvement, and I prefer the Sigma 17-70 to the Canon 18-55.

How lucky - I never get presents like that!

Both cameras are very good, but the D80 is probably nearing the end of its life now while the Canon is newer, more professional in its build quality (and therefore bigger and heavier) and better specified. Its continuous frame rate is faster, so it's better if you shoot action. It also has Live View and Dust Reduction, which the Nikon doesn't.

So all in all, I'd say the Canon is the better choice. But do handle them both, because the way they feel and operate is so important.

As for a lens, the 17-85mm IS USM, as previously mentioned, is as good a choice as any.
