First DSLR
      #684579 - 29/07/2008 21:15

Looking to purchase my first DSLR but I am not up to speed on all the technical jargon. I am looking at one of the following to take family, holiday and wildlife pictures.

Canon EOS 400D, Olympus E-510, Pentax K100D or Nikon D80.

Can anyone help as to which one to purchase?

Thanks

The usual advice in these situations is to go to a good photo store and look at and handle your potential choices. A clear winner may well emerge at this point. Also I would add that if you have done this at a helpful store that you also buy your chosen product there, you then have back up should you encounter any problems. You may well pay a little more than sourcing via the internet or mail order, but you will have after sales service readily available.

Any of these cameras will perform well enough, but it is fair to say that there is more available in terms of third party lenses and accessories for Canon and Nikon. These two tend to be stocked more widely and in greater depth than other manufacturers products, although Sony (which you don't mention) seem to be gaining ground.

Don't forget to look at the Sony Alpha 350 ... it's not at all bad.

Indeed, it seems that every time I go into a camera shop there seems to be more Sony prominence on the shelves.
