It depends on your budget really. If you can find the body much cheaper on its own than with its kit lens then you can put the money towards a better one. Sigma and Tamron have a good range of lenses for around £200-300 with focal ranges of around 18-50mm and 18-70mm, while Canon has 17-55mm, 17-40mm and 17-85mm varities which would suit.

I have the Canon 17-40mm myself and consider it to be an excellent lens. For an L quality lens it's one of the cheapest, but it exhibits a little fringing and its focal range is relatively short so you might want to look at alternatives. The Tamron 28-75mm is also a favourite.
Have a look at our reviews at:

Hope this helps,

It usually only costs about £50 extra for the kit lens so I'd get that. It's compact and has Image Stabilisation. If you later find it not suitable for your needs you can upgrade.
If you want to get a better lens to start with, the Canon EF-S 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM Lens is a good option for a wider range than the 17-40mm, at around £350, or the Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 DC Macro Lens as a faster, closer-focusing and cheaper (about £240) option.
