Timely, as I am looking at a more 'portable' device to store off site i.e. at work. I have the Freecom external 500GB drive but it's a little too big/heavy to be truly portable. This could be the answer....unless anyone knows of any others that might be worth looking at

I have a work provided 80GB portable hard-drive, but ideally I'd like a back for that. If anyone knows any similar type products they'd recommend I'd be interetsed to hear.

I've got a couple of these - they're pretty small but not the world's smallest, they do the job and require no external power supply.
I also have one of these that holds all my iTunes music and videos.

Thanks Geoff, it looks like the Freecom ones in Chris's article give more GB/£ for less size. Actually, I just noticed the contact phone number and I see their UK operation is based in Harrogate. I could do with one for Edinburgh but I doubt they'd let me pop down and have a look.

Indeed, no argument with the maths there but as these are new and "world's smallest" the chances are you won't be able to get hold of one for a while anyway!
The Maplin ones are in stock now - the 80Gb one has been reduced in price and may go down again....

I've got a Western Digital one I've had for a few months - seems OK. It's VERY handy with a laptop, I must say.

I've just checked and my work one is a Freecom. I've certainly never had any problems with it so I'm certainly tempted by one of these new ones.

Actually, I've already got one - albeit in 40GB version. It was a hand-me-down from my brother, and judging from its 'exc+' condition I'd say he must have had it for a good couple of years. (I guess the 40GB size would be consistent with that too.) Anyway, he lives out in Japan, which is how come he had it - when things like this arrive on our shores they invariably seem to have been in common use out there for some time. I wonder if we're just not willing to pay the higher prices for early adoption?

I use one of these. Its size is similar to the Freecom drive (124 x 75 x 13mm for Thecus, 109.8mm x 79.5mm x 13.5mm for Freecom), and with the included external battery pack and USB cable it can be used as a portable device to backup photos from your digital camera, as well as a portable HD. You buy your hard drive separately to stick in it.
As it only backs up to FAT32 partitions, you need to use fdisk from a Windows 98 CD - otherwise you'll end up with only a 32GB partition. Apparently Microsoft imposed an artificial limit of 32GB on later versions of fdisk to force people to use NTFS for anything larger - the sneaky little sh!ts ...

I wonder how long before they are building these into the vertical grip. The combined vitues of extended battery life and huge memory might suit a lot of people...

Here goes:
