Hi,
I'm planning on purchasing a Nikon D40 tomorrow, long story basically D50 not working anymore 
I have used a 70-300 mm lens off my old F-65 for airshow photos, I'm guessing from what I've read Nikon have changed something to do with Auto Focus motor on the D40 and this lens won't work (in AF mode) with the D40.
Can anyone suggest a suitable 70-300 for the D40 please? Or even a 55-200. I believe some Sigma lenses are compatible but unable to find a 70-300 anywhere.
Appreciate any advice on this, or even advice on a similar camera or model? Personally I've been a Nikon fan since my F-65 so would rather stick with them  I have a budget of around £300 for my camera, I was also considering the D60?

If you want to have auto-foucus you'll have to either buy a body with a built in AF motor or buy AF-S lenses.
Option one, how about a second hand D70s? Still a fine camera with many bonuses over the D40.
Opton two, Nkon have brought out 55-200 and 70-300 lenses which both have AF-S which would give you AF on a D40/D40x/D60.

Nikon's own 70-300VR is a great lens that works on the D40. Sigma also do a 70-300 with focus motor (don't think it is HSM though).
Bearing in mind the so-called "crop factor", Nikon's 55-200 VR will give you the same field of view at its 200mm setting than your old 300mm lens gave you on a 35mm film camera. The 55-200 is considerably cheaper than the 70-300

If you have bump your budget up to a D80, you won't have to worry about
the AF-S lens issue and you can use your 70-300 from your previous
film camera or, as mentioned, you could go for the AF-S 70-300 VR which is
a skookum lens

Not long ago I bought the 70-300 VR .
I have the 18-200 VR, but haven,t really noticed the VR working.
But on the 70-300 I sat on the beach the other day and had a play with it.
As soon as yo take up first pressure the motor kicks in and keeps going for a fraction after release.
I could definitely see the picture steady itself.
Several people have mentioned this reaction ,but it,s the first time I have seen it.

its a very strange feeling, i was using the vr taking lots of pics of motorbikes and seeing it adjust every shot started to get to me

If you are still happy with the lens you have.
I would be tempted to put that money to a D80 body.
It is a exceptional camera.
And your existing lens will work with it.
