Hi All,
I have a Canon 450D and am pretty new to photography and the whole raw format thing. I have Photoshop CS3 and when I put my SD card into the pc it shows the jpegs alongside the raw pictures which display an icon of CR2 in a blue box with like a silver disc underneath.
When I double click on these it opens up photoshop but have an error message stating "Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended - Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document"
I am able to open them with the Canon Utilities software? Have tried renaming them with a .raw on the end but this still does not work. My photoshop is working for other stuff - I guess this is a simple mistake on something I am doing?
Any help would be much appreciated. And for someone who has mucked about with photoshop, how good is the Canon Utilities for basic editing etc? I know Photoshop is a tremendous package but guess the Canon stuff would be ok to start?

Why not use DPP to process your RAW files? It's included on the CD which came with your camera, and allows a transfer to Photoshop for later processing.

I think you have answered my question for me then. I assumed the image that was RAW (the larger one) would drop straight into Photoshop without having to go through the Canon Utilities>DPP ?
But if thats the way to do it, will do it that way.
Thanks

My version of Photoshop is way too old to allow the addition of RAW processing modules, so I always go from RAW to tif, or whatever, using DPP or Breezebrowser. Others here should be able to advise about updating your copy of Photoshop if that's the way you want to go.

This is a windows thing rather than Photoshop. If you go to the microsoft website and look for the "Microsoft RAW Image Viewer". You'll need to download and install it for windows to be able to view the thumbnails.
This is a link to the XP Version

That's because Photoshop is probably trying to open them a generic RAW file and not the specific RAW format you are using. Try opening Photoshop and opening a file via "File > Open". It should work then.
It will open a new window with all the RAW controls in allowing you to import the RAW (CR2) file.

It will, but I bet you will need to download the latest version of Adobe RAW to read the file.
And you need a reasonably recentversion of photoshop for that. I'm not sure which one, but the Adobe web site should tell you

Phil is right. Go here download the update and install following the instructions.
Alternatively open your copy of CS3 Photoshop, click on help then click on updates.
