Hi,
I recently upgrade my tripod. I got an ex-demo Manfrotto 190XB and a MN056 3-way head (which I prefer to ball head) for ea really good price. I've just been playing around with it and realise that when the head is configured to put the camera in vertical orientation it is not possible to tilt the camera up and down - e.g. if you were doing a vertical landscape shot and wanted to tilt up to have less foreground and much more sky. Is this a limitation of the 056 or of 3-way heads in general?
Cheers

Just an idea... Have you got the camera mounted correctly on the head? Looking at the photos of the head, it looks like it should be possible to do what you want with that head.

Yes, I think it is mounted correctly, I can't really see another way of putting the camera on.

Looking at this pic, I would say that if the lens pointed away and right, the knob to the left would adjust from landscape to portrait, the one to the right would tilt up and down and the other would allow panning.

Looking at the picture Nod appears to be correct. With the camera positioned with it's longest dimension parallel with the longest edge of the camera mount the left-most knob allows the camera to swing to the vertical, the upper right knob will then allow the mounted camera to tilt up and down and the bottom knob controls rotation about the tripod (panning)....

I've used that head with no problems so it's probably just a little familiarity will sort you out on that one.
If you wanted to shoot completely vertically you need to put the camera on back to front as it were but that true of most pan tilt heads.

I've worked it out now! Thanks everyone. One thing I have found with this tripod is that the little black caps that cover the nuts that tigthen the leg clips are just falling off. I've had four fall off already! Will have to stick something in them to make a tighter fit. Is this a Manfrotto "feature" ?

I'd take 'em all off now - they're not essential.
