Bugger, I've left Edinburgh by then. Maybe if I go back for the final weekend of the Fringe I'll pop in.

Went on the 15th and thought there were a number of excellent images and IMO better than the FOTO exhibition on at The Dean and the World Press was FREE . The exhibition I would recommend is Vanity Fair at National Portrait Gallery which is still on until the 21st Sept.

We seem to be in agreement here Ron, I enjoyed both the World Press and the Vanity Fair exhibitions. The FOTO exhibition was never an option for me, I had a good idea what it would be like and a flick through the catalogue confirmed I'd have been bored rigid . . . now if they'd put together an exhibition of vintage prints from the same era by the likes of Eugene Atget, August Sander, Andre Kertesz . . . that I'd have paid to go and see!
And yes, I've been hitting the remainder table in Beyond Words: Eugene Smith's Pittsburgh Project, Andre Kertesz's Early Years, Camera Work - The Photographs (not really a remainder, but reissued and at £7.99 a bargain IMO) . . . I seem to be regressing in my taste these days though I did go along to the Martin Parr signing!

Yes, I thought that some of the images in the FOTO exhibition were to me, (IMHO) pretentious twaddle. One can only hope that next years festival has some worthwhile exhibitions, not that the Vanity Fair one was poor, far from it, when I went it was really busy, but it was raining and miserable. I suppose they are somewhat dependant on what is doing the rounds exhibition wise, so to speak, I think I'd like to see works by Lee Miller, Diane Arbus and Walker Evans in the flesh (or print) as I admire images that I've seen in books and or Net, but, would love the chance of viewing their images properly.

Hi Ron, I went to the VF exhibition on the preview night and viewed the photos in relative comfort. As for Walker Evans, was at a big retrospective at the Met in 2000 . . . . thought I'd died and gone to heaven
The NGS recently acquired a 'room' of Arbus prints so here's hoping
The Portrait Gallery is closing for a couple of years soon for refurbishment so that'll be one less photo venue (and cafe) for me to visit for a while

Alan, someone else I know went to the preview and gave me the heads up about the exhibition, do you have to be a member of the national galleries to get this 'privilege' or do you sign up for a newsletter? or something like that. I'd probably find it worthwhile and it'd save me asking you here on the forum what's happening photo art wise in 'auld reekie'
Well if the refurb is only a quarter as good as they've done at the Kelvingrove then it'll be well worth it and the cafe might be improved as well. But yes one less venue for the possibility of a good photo exhibition during the Festival is somewhat concerning, maybe they could use the space at MOMA that they filled with Tracy Emin crud (you'll gather I'm not a fan and I didn't go to see it) this year.

If you're a Friend you get free admission to exhibitions in all of the National Galleries as well as invites to previews, although in my case it was freebe though my wife's work (S&N, now Heineken!). I was a 'friend' for a number of years but I let it lapse, I keep meaning to join again as it means I can sample exhibitions I might think twice about paying to see. Probably only worth it if you're in Edinburgh a lot!
The trouble with the Portrait Gallery closing is that apart from the Festival they normally have 3 or 4 smaller (and free) photo exhbitions throughout the year which often throws up the odd gem, I'm going to miss it . . . and Stills seemed to have deserted photography altogether

Alan,
Your probably right in that for the few times I am over in Edinburgh, being a 'friend', really wouldn't make economic sense, when I was over during the festival and went to FOTO and Vanity Fair, by buying entry to both I got a discount anyway .
Stills, that's what I knew I'd missed seeing I remember thinking that there was something missing in Cockburn St when walking up to Beyond Words, in fact on thinking on it I don't think it's called Stills any more!
