I was thinking of taking my mum to Hastings and then travel around a bit (train/buses). So, I've never been to Eastbourne or Rye. Has anyone else been?

Not been for a while. Hastings is a bit run down with the atribibutal socal problems you find in such towns.
Rye is quite nice with cobbled streets and old houses, with a few things to see and do -

You could head inland a bit, theres quite a few small older, and very pretty, villages around Sussex.
Not sure what the public transport is like, but there is a place called Mitchelin (sp?) priory which is very nice if you can get to it.

Hastings has its good points, but as mentioned it also has its problems. I visit now and again and always enjoy myself. Rye is lovely with good restaurants and tea shops and lots of antique shops. Eastbourne is also good to visit and the shops are pretty good. You can take a bus up to Beachy Head (10 mins) and enjoy the wonderful views. Nearby Birling Gap (also on the same bus route) is very beautiful too with good photos to be had especially at sunset. I should know, I live here!

Maybe it's Eastbourne - with an afternoon atop the cliffs, staying over in Eastbourne and then off to Rye the following day back to London that evening. Or maybe we should stay in Rye ... ah, decisions.

I just went ahead and booked a b&b in Rye for a day. Now the question is whether to go there straight away or to actually go via Eastbourne ...

Hi Bettina,
You won't be far from me at all! Rye is stunning and at this time of year, the olde houses have lots of flower displays around their houses. It's very picturesque. Places to try there will be: Mermaid Street, The castle area and also Rye Harbour. If you are looking to go further afield whilst down this way, these places maybe good to try:
Bodiam Castle - approx 13 miles away
Battle Abey - approx 11 miles away
Seven Sisters - approx 25 miles away in seaford, with amazing views of the cliffs. Let me know if you want this as I will tell you an amazing spot to shoot the seven sister cliffs.
Hastings - By the old town, there are some really worthwhile shots of the fishing boats etc.
I hope this helps to give you some ideas nearby to where I live. If you need anymore help, please do give me a shout Bettina. Also if you need a photography buddy whilst down here, let me know! :-)

Hi Alan,
This sounds great. Photo buddy would be great ... but ... I'm with mum and now a family friend has decided to tag along and I will have to play oldie sitter because the ladies like a tipple.
I've booked in at the windmill, hope it's okay. They want to send me brochures etc. So I'm looking forward to that. One question I had, from the village (town) to Rye Harbour - seems like a longish walk. How long would it actually take. I was considering going to Camber Sands but not sure if the ladies will want to go, too.

Sounds like you will keeping them on their best behaviour! I have just come back from an evening in Rye and it looks very lovely at the moment. Camber sands beach is very nice, photographically, it is quite baron, but would be nice on sunrise/sunset - it is about 5 miles away.
Rye Harbour is about a 1km walk, but very pretty on the way as the landscape is very flat and there are some good shots looking back at Rye on the hill. If you want shots of boats etc, go to Hastings by the old town.
One shot I want to get is the to take from the bottom end of Mermaid street looking up the hill first thing in the morning, I think it would be lovely (must go and do that sometime!)
When are you going? Would love to see your pictures when you come back! Let me know if you need any further help with the local area.
Enjoy.
Al

I always enjoy Rye as it is so beautiful. Al, I've always wanted a good shot from the bottom of Mermaid Street too, but there is always a blummin car parked half way up when I've been there. Is morning the best time to do it then? Around the church is also good for pics - gorgeous old buildings. The harbour is a bit of a trek from the town Bettina, but you could always get a cab if there is no bus. I think there is a bird reserve at the harbour, but other than walking and taking pics, there isn't a lot to do there. I had a lovely meal in the sea food restaurant at the end of the Town Quay recently - mmmmmm, lovely moule!

We don't have a car, so the cab option might be worth considering. Thanks.

Hi Rob & Bettina,
It is a pain if a car is there. They shouldn't be parking on the street at all, so my best suggestion would be to go very early in the morning and wait!
If you want to go out for a nice meal Bettina, book a table at the Marmaid inn (need to book a fair bit in advance).
Have fun!
