DSLR For newbie around £500
      #682284 - 23/07/2008 20:26

Hi guys, this is my first post on the forum so hello to all. I've wanted to get into photography for a while and finally took the plunge when i bought a Pana FZ18 2 weeks to take to Venice with me. Nice camera but noise is a big issue in low light shots which is one of the areas I'm interested in.

Was looking at the Nikon D40x but noticed it doesn't support bracketing and as I'd like to try HDR later on was wondering if this is essential? was wondering your views on a decent camera and lens kit for around the £500 mark, my interests are landscape and wildlife with scope for HDR later on when i get the software and talent. Thanks in advance for any replies.

Chris.

Have a look at the Canon 450D.I bought mine a couple of months back and am very pleased with it. Does bracketing. It doesn't have I.S. built in though, or a tilting screen.

Not sure where the IS and tilty screen came from, but in that case, the Sony A300 rides to the rescue! Don't do hdr myself, but gather both the Canon and Sony limit the bracketing to +/- 2 stops. You may need this to be at least 3 for best range. But you can adjust the exposure in manual mode, changing the shutter speed to reflect bracketing.

If anyone who needs to bracket +/- 3 stops, they should stick with a compact. With modern dSLR's, and available software, there is no need to bracket that much.

My Samsung GX-10 can take either three or five images using the bracketing mode, each different from its neighbour by anything up to two stops.

You could always bracket manually...

What about live view? is it really all it's cracked up to be, i was looking at the 40x for pure picture quality because it's had good reports as that's whats important, right?

All current dSLRs can give excellent quality photos, there are no duds. Choose on how the camera feels to you and if it has the features you want. Live-view can be very useful in some situations - the Sony a300 and a350 implementation is easily the best (see AP reports and comments).

Hmmm - personally, I wouldn't go that far - you're in the realms of the unnatural at that point, IMVHO.

for checking prices not a bad place o start prices

check out canons website there is a £50 cashback on the 450 but i dont know if thats body only or including the kit lens, dont know if the others do cashback

as already mentioned they all perform well, it is just a matter of getting them in your hands and which one feels best for you imo

Well, my spanky new D60 twin lens kit arrived this morning and i'm a happy bunny, feels very nice to hold with the deep grip as i have big hands and the build is superb. cant wait to try it out on the weekend. The boys in work think i'm mad "£650 for a camera, you've got rocks in your head!!" was the first comment, ahem. Anyway i'm happy and i'll post some shots up after i've had a chance to use it, just hope the weather is nice

Chris

If the guys at work thing £650 is too much you'd better not tell them about all the things you'll buy over the coming years...

Yeah well they're tight gits in work, I'm the only one with 2 jobs so i can afford to be a bit more "liberal" with my money and i think there's a touch of jealousy in there too. They're like "do you know how many pints that is?" Ah well.

£650 equates to just under two pints... of ink for your photo printer.
