Best Nikon Film Camera
      #680978 - 20/07/2008 18:52

Hi,
just before digital started to dominate, what were the best Nikon film bodies on the market? Also, if I got one would my AFS lenses work with it?

Thanks
Ian

F5 and F6 were probably the best of the Nikon film bodies with AF. The F100 and F80 are more affordable though!

Check the lens manuals to see if they'll work properly on the F??? bodies. Be aware that you'll probably get significant vignetting on any 35mm body if you try using a Dx coded lens

Depends what you're looking for. The F5 is a hugely techical camera that is capable of all sorts of wizardry - superb stuff. My F3 takes some beating however - manual of course - but capable of some great images when combined with (cheap-ish these days) Nikon AI or AIS lenses.

I would nominate the FM2 or FM2n. Light but robust with a mechanical shutter and affordable. Then there is the FM3a with hybrid shutter at a higher price. However if autofocus is required the above mentioned, but don't dismiss the F90x. As a bonus any of these cameras use easily obtainable and inexpensive batteries.

You can get a classic F4 for peanuts nowadays and they work with internal focus lenses. Mine takes 6 AA batteries (F4E) but the standard on takes a couple so non of your expensive ones needed. If I wanted one now I'd probably get an F5 as they have come down in price something stupid to what they once were.

The best is probably the F6 as it's the only film SLR that Nikon makes nowadays.

Nice camera, small & light (certainly can't say that for the F5/6). However the viewfinder screen is effectively fixed and the metering is unsophisticated. Mind you it does work as a fully manual camera (without batteries, only the metering is lost) - that's worth a lot. If you can't afford an Olympus OM3, certainly worth consideration.

FMN2 or F6 depending on your criteria to define best. I own and still use the former. It is not for sale.

I'd go for an F100 - almost an F5 and yet less than half the price and less bulk. They're getting silly chepoa these days as well. I picked up a near mint one recently for £160!

Agreed. I once saw a comment along the lines of "the F100 is a modern day version of the Nikon F". Couldn't put it better myself. A great camera.
