Cokin Filters
      #680968 - 20/07/2008 18:23

I am in the process of buying the a200, i have loads of cokin filters that fit in the holder that goes over the end of the lens. Will it be ok to use them with this camera. Thanks Ken

They will work but results may be different in some cases to what you expect depending on how you have the white balance set in your camera.

Other problem could be vignetting. Are they A, P or Z Cokin? If using A, be careful at wide angles as you could suffer at the edges.

Only filters I use now are ND Grad and Circular Polarising.

Cokin filters work just as well with digital as film (subject to the comments made above) although most of the colour effects can be as easily and more controllably reproduced post capture via an editing suite - with the added bonus that you can have the same picture with any colour you like plus as seen... One thing to note with using the coloured filters is that the camera should be set to a fixed white balance (eg daylight or tungsten) as Auto White will attempt to counteract the filter - with results that are not always predictable or pleasant....

Many of the other effects filters such as prisms, starbursts etc. can also be reproduced via editing software - though the effects may not be quite the same as direct capture in which case the use of the filter may be preferable.

Best option is try the various filters on camera and compare them with what can be achieved post capture and go with whichever gives the results you want.
