hello, i am new to this forum just purchased a new leica M7 and a leica elmarit-m-28mm ASPH lens, i am thinking of buying a universal polarizing filter for colour film and a red filter for black and white film. i have read that this lens suffers from vignetting, has anybody suffered this problem.

I don't quite understand what you are asking. Wide angle lenses are all prone to vignetting to some degree but you have bought a first class lens. Filters are always difficult on wide angle and sometimes it is better to step up a size to reduce the risk of vignetting from the filter ring. Polarising filters are especially tricky on rangefinders as you don't see exactly what is happening though there are some 'work around' accessories.

Just in case someone isn't clear about what Mike is saying the suggestion is (I think) to use a filter that is larger than the lens thread and use a reducing ring from the filter to the lens. Reducing rings have a thin ring and throw the filter outside the edge of the angle of view. Koods do all sizes of reducing ring at a very reasonable price.
You could get filters sufficiently oversize to cover any future lens purchases and use several sets of reducing rings to match your filters to your lenses thus only needing to buy one set of filters.
I suggest also that you buy good quality filters such as Hoya Pro. They have very thin bezells, particularly on their polarizing filter which will help avoid the vignetting you are concerned with.

If you want a polariser, try the Kenko polariser for RF cameras sold by Robert White in Poole. As for a straight set of B&W filters, then I would get the filters made by B+W; they make them in all Leica sizes, use the same glass as the Leica ones, but are cheaper.
