Ilford Sportsman...
      #679018 - 15/07/2008 16:49

Hi all,

I bought an Ilford Sportsman for £2 the other day. It's an interesting looking camera, everything seems to work fine except that the film frame indicator does not seem to work as per manual, in fact seems stuck, but the shutter seems to be working fine and so does the lens apertures. The only thing is the lens seems a bit fogged but I have used other cameras with the lenses slightly fogged and still got some respectable results.

It has no metering as far as I can see, but that is not a problem (a bit of sunny f16 and my handheld meter might do the job )

Anyone can tell me any more about the camera? How do you rate them and so on and on...I plan to run some slow films through it (well, Velvia) since there is no mirror slap and bathe them in my favourite Tetenal kit.

There are a huge number of different Sportsman models and variants, See here for a listing (phase 3). The book is a very good read and I recommend it to any collector's library.

Incidentally, it mentions that the film counter mechanism underwent many changes.

I think I have 2 or 3 sportsman cameras. They operate a bit like a holga in that the viewfinder is completly independant from the lens.

Yup, but I don't see that as a problem, I used a Franka Solida before and I can say I'm ok judging focussing distances. How do you find the lenses on your Sportsmans (Sportmen?)

TBH I cant remember if I did actually run any film through them. I gave one a clean out but I think I stopped from there. I bought them to collect mostly.

The PBase website had a load of images from users I seem to remember, could be worth a look?
