Hi all,
I am about to get a new camera after my trust D70s has finally given up on me (accident from myself).I am now cannot decide what to actually upgrade to. I would like the D200 or even the D300 but since these are both out of my budget I have decided that the D80 is the natural choice. The only issue is I have recently noticed that the Fuji S5 pro have dropped to the same price as the D80. From my understanding that this is compatible with my lens and speed light. Can you please give your opinion on the Fuji compared with the D80? I have seen many reviews for the Fuji against the D200 but now the price seems to be more comparable to the D80. Your thoughts are much appreciated

If you want the speed of the D70 the D80 is your choice. The Fujifilm may have greater image quality (I personally prefer the Fujifilm look with that crazy dynamic range and would go for the S5) but speed wise or if speed is critical for you, you should probably give it a miss in comparison to the D80 and this is coming from a big Fujifilm fan. You got the D200 AF on the S5 but the rest is a bit on the slow side (it also produces much larger files with plenty of colour info and can interpolate to 12MP reasonably, not perfectly, but resonably).
Also with what the D300 and the now the D700 can do in terms of dynamic range I don't think Fujifilm will be able to claim that crown for much longer, (but this bit is just an observation ).

Hi FujiSigmaNolta,
Thank you for your advice, I am now leaning more towards the fuji, especially at the current price of 499. I dont usually use my camera for sport so speed is not really an issue. From my understanding the Fuji will give me better colour expecially for people photography. But I also take alot of landscape too. Do you know what the Fuji is like in terms for landscape? Does the megapixel difference really show (nikon 8meg vs fuji 6meg)? in terms of sharpness etc does the fuji's sensor match the nikons d80?
Thanks again for your help

I've been looking at the S5 recently, primarily because of its low price. I need a camera that can do a bit of everything, including landscape. I thought the high DR would come in handy there. I read a lot of reviews and the over-riding impression I came away with is that colours and DR are superb but resolution and image softness leave a lot to be desired. I came to the conclusion that the S5 didn't fit my needs despite its very good price.

The S5pro is great for landscape work particularly because it can simulate Fujifilm's transparency film. As for the softness that's so spoken about, it is not that bad (in fact not at all) and if you shoot RAW (which is what you really want particularly if you do landscapes) you will get some great results and no softness. And no, the megapixel difference between 6 and 8MP in print is negligible and even between 6 and 10MP it is only 2 inches. There was an AP issue that dealt with this some time ago.
I have many prints from my S3pro (the previous model) which has the same sensor and they print very well at A3. But with the S3 and S5 the sensor is perhaps nearer to 8MP in terms of resolution than 6. At times you can also interpolate the S3 and S5 images with satisfactory results to 12MP. Even better results by using a very good lens and low ISO but I have done that at ISO400 and the results were very usable at 12MP.
I hope this helps!
PS: I would say the sharpness is pretty much equal all things being the same but the D80 is 10MP which will give you a bigger print or if printing at the same size more detail. But if you don't need the speed, I think the S5 is your camera as you like people photography.

I had a D80 before upgrading to a D300. The D80 is a great camera - wish I'd kept it as a spare!

As long as you do not need high Frames Per Second, I would go Fuji, if only for the fact that the S5 Pro / D200 body is so well made and ergonomic. Quality wise Mrs P still prefers the S5Pro to my d300, as it is well suited to the type of photography she does i.e. Macro, lot of black and white conversions and subjects that need a high dynamic range.
Hope this helps

I would certainly go for the S5pro. I recently got my hands on one and if I hadn't recently purchased the D3 with 14-24mm. I would have bought a pair of Fuji S5pro's. BTW I also own a pair of D80s but at the price the S5pro is selling at it's one hell of camera and bargain.
