Greetings-
I have a Samsung GX-1L (Pentax *ist D) and when I shoot in RAW mode (which I understand is more or less required in order to do digital infrared) the files have an extension of .PEF.
Photoshop CS2 says it can recognize it, but gives and error when I actually try to open it.
ANy suggestions? I bought my camera used, without a manual, so I'm not certain what to do.
Cheers!

Your camera manual wouldn't tell you what to do in photoshop anyway.
Have you checked what version of AdobeRAW (or whatever it's called) you are using and 'if' it will work with the .PEF files?

There's no necessity to shoot in RAW if you want to do digital IR.
CS2 may need updating to open the PEF files, but you could also open them and convert them to 8-bit TIFF, 16-bit TIFF or JPEG by using Pentax Photo Laboratory which is supplied with the camera.

Photoshop doesn't like .PEF files - I always save mine in .DNG format (switches in the menu of the Pentax, don't know about the Samsung). Otherwise you are best getting the Pentax Photolab as posted above.

Thanks gang, got it sorted out.
CS2 has a RAW reader built-in that needed to be updated.
I had read that RAW gave me the best option for IR, but if I don't have to shoot RAW, then I can save the flash-card space and go back to high quality.
Cheers!

An opinion I would stand by. With IR photography you are losing an awful lot of image data to start with and RAW maximises your opportunities to adjust it without major loss in quality. You can save your images as JPEG but IMO you will find it more difficult to adjust them and achieve the look you want...

Interesting, I will have to try it both ways and see what I can see.
Last night I did shoot some in std high quality .jpg mode, and I *thought* I noticed a loss of "range" as it were, but chalked it up to a new area for me.
Back to RAW to compare.

What I find with JPG files is that pushing adjustments too far tends to cause a certain 'blocky' coarseness and loss of tonal gradation, particularly in areas of fairly even tone. With RAW I can normally push the adjustments that much further before this starts to happen.
It is possible to achieve excellent results in JPG as long as you take care not to over adjust and get the image as right 'in camera' as possible. Basically RAW allows you more leeway to recover images that are poorly exposed or more importantly images where the exposure range of the scene exceeds that of the camera - as long as you expose to keep the highlights from blowing out RAW is more effective for recovering deep shadow detail with acceptable quality than JPEG.

Actually the Sammy GX-1L is the Pentax *ist DL2 with a different label, the D did not have a Sammy clone, and there are some people still waiting for a worthy D successor...
The DL2 takes jpegs and PEF only. Only the K10D and K20D have the option of PEF or DNG, the current Samsung equivalent, the GX-20 has DNG only I think (or is it PEF?)...

The Samsung cameras have DNG only.
