Found these amazing samples upon visiting Warehouseexpress.com and reading Andy Rouse's review.
This puts me in a bit of a situation as I was budgeting for a D300 but by the time I finish saving for it, I might be able to stretch a bit and get the D700.

Yer little so-so making me want to have D700 instead of D200! Will have to wait to see if the price will drop a tad bit next year...perhaps sommat for my 41st birthday!

Amazing?
Surely Sir, you must have a vivid imagination!
All taken at 200iso, so no demonstration of superior iso performance, which is the main advantage of the FX models.
I think, to be honest, most "new" generation models of all makes could equal that.

Nah, look at the tonal gradations, take a good close look at highlights, the way they roll off...
As for the demonstration of high ISOs...absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. In fact, there are two taken at ISO400, if we are gonna be picky, granted, not high enough, but ISO400 so they are not all at 200.
Given the performance of the D300 at high ISOs which, by the way, leaves the competition trailing by miles,we can only expect that the D700 improves even more on that, given that it has the same sensor as the D3.
I think Nikon is getting very close to that nice portrait film look that most others (Fujifilm excepting) can only try and that's try with a good few yards missing. I would dare say that the Nikon/Fujifilm partnership is baring some fruit.
Well, I am impressed.

Sorry, but I'm not impressed either!
Good images, but I'm sure a D300 could match these photos at the lowly ISO's used here.
I'm sure the D700 is stunning at high ISOs (as the D3 is), but I don't think these images demonstrate that

I've has a D3 since December and let me just say that going back to full-frame feels so right, the lenses provide the field of view you expect. DX does seem a compromise. If you can stretch to a D700, I wouldn't hesitate. But for the fact I'm waiting for the D3x, I'd probably buy a D700 as a second FF body. My D2x, great camera though it is, doesn't see much light of day these days.

Scroll down for 'real world' ISO tests, side by side. Above that there are pieces on dynamic range, bokeh etc.
Imo, the overall noise performance of the D300 is great, but from 1600 just look how much more detail is retained in the FX sensors.
Not a bad one among them - it's a great lineup Nikon have at the top end now.

I think that Nikon have specified the first three of a quartet very well. It is quite clear for whom these cameras are targetted.

After a serious consider as whether any of those would benefit me, I would say no!
As there alway's a second hand market for D200...
