I think the 2nd one has the potential to be an exciting pic....maybe shoot from lower and use shallower DoF to make the dog stand out more?
I think you could do with a bit eye contact in the 1st.

Like the second one as it stands but have to agree that the 1st one doesn't work due to the lack of eye contact. You can get away with the subject not looking toward you with an action shot but when the subject is static then as a general rule eye contact is required to make the viewer engage with the subject. This isn't an absolute of course as candid photography often works better when the subject is not aware of the camera or the photographer. For example...
